DEAR NEIGHBORS
The North Hills Community Association (NHCA) has accomplished much in the last few months. With your support, Measure MM, Oakland’s Wildfire Prevention Zone, passed with over 70% approval in the November election. NHCA Board member Elizabeth Stage was the key leader in this resounding win. With its enactment, Oakland has secured funding to manage vegetation on public properties and to ensure that emergency routes are passable.
There’s plenty more for NHCA to address. We are frustrated by the slow pace of repair work on a deteriorating stretch of Tunnel Road at Bay Forest Drive. We continue to demand more thorough annual property inspections and prompt clearing of dangerous neglected parcels.
NHCA members regularly attend Oakland Police Commission meetings on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month. We are working to change overly restrictive policies, so that officers can be more efficient and effective. Please contact Rajni Mandal(rajni.v.mandal@gmail.com) to join this group.
The NHCA is responsible for managing two gardens, the Memorial and the Gateway Gardens, one at each intersection of Tunnel and Hiller. We are restoring these overplanted and overgrown gardens to their original purpose: to offer different models of attractive, firesafe landscaping, emphasizing native species and conforming to codes (as required by insurance companies). This is a major, multi-year undertaking. We are actively seeking grants and corporate contributions, but depend upon neighbors’ participation, as well as volunteers from school, community, and corporate organizations.
Oakland is enduring financial and leadership challenges. The need for the vigilance of neighbors and solidarity among residents has never been greater. Your North Hills Community Association is partnering with other community organizations to make sure
residents have the services and protection they need to stay safe.
Your financial contributions are vital. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation at northhillscommunity.org and check out our garden work schedule.
Thanks for your engagement and support!
