How Chinatown Got Its Unique Designs?

Chinatown got its name in the 1850s when the Chinese shops and businesses gathered together in California's gold mining towns. In the following decades Chinatown formed its unique architectural design to signify its mixed culture between the West and the East.

The video below shares an intriguing history of the San Francisco Chinatown and how it helped shape the model of Chinatown worldwide.

From the Gold Rush to the Transcontinental Railroad Construction: The Chinese Moved on

A transcontinental railroad to connect the East Coast and the West Coast of the USA was first proposed in 1844. It was finally realized in 1869. Among all engineers and workers who accomplished this achievement after the Civil War, there were about 12,000 Chinese workers who made significant contributions to building about 700 miles of the Western section of the railroad over four years. It was with this historical project the Chinese immigrants began to spread from California to the Rocky Mountains and the East Coast.

The following video captures this history and shares reflections of today's Chinese Americans.

A Chinese Poem of The Month

CALLING ON A HERMIT

I asked a lad beneath an old pine tree.

"My master's gone for herbs," he said to me.

"He must be here within this mountain dell,

But where, with clouds so thick, I cannot tell."

Chia Tao (779-843 AD)
