The Great Books in Chinese (Part 2)

In the previous newsletter, we introduced the Chinese classics and The Four Great Books. In this newsletter, we will introduce some contemporary Chinese writers and their works.

There have been two Chinese writers who won the Nobel Literature Prize. The first one was Mr. Xingjian Gao, who won the prize in 2000 for his book "Soul Mountain". He was awarded “for an œuvre of universal validity, bitter insights and linguistic ingenuity, which has opened new paths for the Chinese novel and drama”. It was the first time that the Nobel Literature Prize was awarded to a writer writing in Chinese. Click here for more about Gao.

The second Chinese writer who won the honor was Mr. Yan Mo (a pen name meaning "do not speak") in 2012. His novel "Life and Death are Wearing Me Out" was noted for "hallucinatory realism merg[ing] folk tales, history and the contemporary". Click here for more about Mo.

Who will be the next one? It is widely believed that a female Chinese writer Ms. Xiaohua Deng will be the best bet. Her pen name is Can Xue, meaning "both the dirty snow that refuses to melt and the purest snow at the top of a high mountain". Click here for more about Can Xue.

The following video is about "Life and Death are Wearing Me Out".

Minor Snow, November 22 (xiǎo xuě 小雪)

Rain has turned into snow now. Rainbows won't appear until next year. Yang (a symbol of heaven, maleness, light, activity, and penetration) is decreasing and Yin (a symbol of earth, femaleness, darkness, passivity, and absorption) is increasing. Winter is coming. Some traditional Chinese activities include preparing smoked pork and sausage for the Chinese New Year.

The Hottest Chinese Song in 2023

Luocha Kindom, a song mixed with folk, rap, and electronic music, is no doubt the most played song in China. The songwriter and singer, Dao Lang (the Knife Man), borrowed a Chinese strange tale from a few hundred years ago and created this satirical song to reflect the ironies of modern Chinese society. This song goes well with Mr. Yan Mo's novel.
