Martial Arts

Chinese martial arts are always filled with myth and truth. Serving as a form of physical and mental exercise, martial arts have a strong presence in Chinese culture and society. Many forms of martial arts have been developed over hundreds of years under Taoist, Confucian, and Buddhist principles and theories. Millions of people practice martial arts daily in public squares across China in groups or alone. However, you don’t really see martial arts practitioners flying in the air or walking on the surface of water. The martial arts masters in movies are created to carry fantasies and ideal human characters. After all, the Chinese culture also needs its own superheroes.

Taoism and Tai Chi

Taoists are known for Tai Chi, a popular martial art form that is closely associated with Taoism. Tai Chi in Chinese means the Grand Terminus, the source and the beginning of everything including Yin and Yang. A legendary Taoist named Sanfeng Zhang is believed to be the one who created this martial art form almost a thousand years ago. The following video introduces this mysterious figure and the Taoist ideas in martial arts.

One of the best martial arts movies in recent years is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The movie was made in 2000 and is based on a novel written around 1940. The story reveals how martial arts deeply connect with human relationships in Chinese society. The following video is the trailer for this movie.
