Tea and Zen

Zen, a branch of Buddhism, was introduced by Bodhidharma and originated as Chan (禪) in China in the 6th century. Zen divided into two schools, the Southern school, which believed in sudden enlightenment, and the Northern school, which believed in gradual enlightenment. Zen spread to Japan and blossomed there by the 12th century. Now Zen has a significant following in the West and the rest of the world.

Both Buddhism and Zen teaches that the ability to achieve enlightenment is inherent in everyone but is covered by ignorance and temptations. Instead of going through the study of scripture, the practice of good deeds, rites and ceremonies, or worship of images, Zen believes that enlightenment can be achieved by breaking through the boundaries of mundane logical thought. Tea often becomes a vehicle for the Zen masters to share their wisdom. Here are a couple of these stories (click the links to read): 1) a cup of tea; 2) go drink tea.

Brewing Tea and Observing the Mind

"What is common to Zen and the art of tea is the constant attempt both make at simplification. The elimination of the unnecessary is achieved by Zen in its intuitive grasp of final reality; by the art of tea, in the way of living typified by serving tea in the tearoom. The art of tea is the aestheticism of primitive simplicity."

As with all local cultural and performing arts events – ticket sales only cover a portion of the expenses to produce the event. We are therefore dependent and grateful for the generosity of local Foundations, business partners, and individuals to stage the Chinese New Year Festival as an important part of the cultural fabric in the Pikes Peak Region.
