For Undergraduates

Apply to Be a Young Ambassador

Applications are now open to become a DAAD Young Ambassador for the upcoming academic year! Young Ambassadors are undergraduate students who recently studied abroad in Germany (flexible requirement) and promote study in Germany at their home colleges/universities with help from DAAD. Only one student may be nominated per college/university.

Research Funding

German Studies Research Grant

German Studies Research Grants are awarded for one to two months to highly qualified undergraduate and graduate students at US and Canadian universities nominated by the professor supervising their German studies-relevant research.

Gilman Global Partner Spotlight: Germany

Tune in on May 3rd at 3 PM Eastern for the Gilman Global Partner Spotlight webinar on Germany hosted by the Gilman Scholarship Program and DAAD. This virtual event will provide information on educational opportunities in Germany – above and beyond those offered through the Gilman Program partnership. Topics covered will include the structure and timing of the academic year in Germany, an overview of the higher education institutional landscape, as well as other scholarships, career opportunities, or networks to stay connected with Germany.

Spring Deadline Announced

Short-Term Research Grants

Short-Term Research Grants are awarded for 1-6 months to highly qualified candidates who have completed a Master’s degree or Diploma, or in exceptional cases a Bachelor’s degree at the latest by the time they begin their grant supported research, or those who have already completed a PhD (postdocs).

Research Stays

DAAD offers grants for one to three months in all academic disciplines to scholars at US and Canadian institutions of higher education to pursue research at universities, libraries, archives, institutes or laboratories in Germany. The aim of this particular program is to support short-term research stays and thus promote the exchange of experience and networking amongst colleagues.

Re-Invitation Grants

DAAD offers grants for one to three months in all academic disciplines to scholars at US and Canadian institutions of higher education to pursue research at universities, libraries, archives, institutes or laboratories in Germany. The aim of this particular program is to enable former scholarship holders to carry out research projects in Germany and to maintain contacts as part of DAAD’s global alumni network.

2023 DAAD Contest

#PictureYourselfInGermany

For this year’s contest, we’re asking you to #PictureYourselfInGermany! Using the 2D visual artistic medium of your choice, #PictureYourselfInGermany by depicting a scene, either a self-portrait or POV, of your dream trip to Germany! Entries may be made digitally or using traditional media.

Life will imitate art for the grand prize winner, who will win free round-trip airfare (up to $1,700) to anywhere in Germany! Second prize will receive a free language course at the Goethe-Institut (online or in person), and third prize will receive a digital drawing tablet.

Come meet with us at the Germany Grad Fair 2023 hosted by the German Consulate General New York and the NY-based German University Liaison Offices! The Germany Grad Fair will give participants the opportunity to meet representatives from German universities, funding agencies and cultural institutions, allowing students and young professionals to make more informed decisions about the most suitable program and university for their specific goals. Participants will also gain an understanding of the application process and degree requirements, and they will hear from alumni who will share their experiences studying and/or doing research in Germany.

Falling Walls Science Summit - Global Call

Every year, the Falling Walls Foundation launches one of the largest world-wide searches for the most outstanding breakthroughs of the year across all the sciences, known as the Falling Walls Global Call 2023. This year, the foundation again invites leading actors in science and academia to nominate the latest breakthrough science projects in 9 different categories to be named the Falling Walls Science Breakthroughs of the Year. The Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year laureates will present their groundbreaking research at the Falling Walls Science Summit on November 9, 2023 in Berlin.
