Open Doors 2020 Report Released
The 2020 Open Doors Annual Data Release took place Monday, November 16th, 2020. According to this year’s findings, released by the Institute of International Education (IIE), there was an increase in the number of students from Germany enrolled at U.S. universities and institutions of higher education. According to the data, 9,242 German students were enrolled at U.S. institutions of higher education in the 2019/2020 academic year. This figure represents a .6% increase from the previous year. Germany ranked 16th as a place of origin of international students in the U.S.
The new data also revealed that 12,029 students in the U.S. chose Germany as their study abroad destination in the 2018/2019 academic year. This is a 1.8% decrease from the year before. Germany is ranked 5th overall as a study abroad destination and represents approximately 3.5% of the study abroad market share.
Referring to the report, DAAD North America director Benedikt Brisch said “the 2020 Open Doors Annual Data on international exchange at the IIE shows that transatlantic academic mobility between the USA and Germany is vital and dynamic. American and German universities offer attractive study abroad experiences and opportunities for academic and professional careers.”
Supported by a grant from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, Open Doors is a comprehensive information resource on international students and scholars studying or teaching at higher education institutions in the United States, and U.S. students studying abroad for academic credit at their home colleges or universities.
Please note that the figures in the Open Doors report do not include non-credit bearing programs such as DAAD’s RISE programs and various DAAD-funded summer courses and research grants.

The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program is one of Europe’s most prestigious grants. Each year around 20 visual artists, writers, filmmakers, composers and sound artists are invited to Berlin to focus on their work and engage with the city’s vibrant art scene. Writers, filmmakers and composers/sound artists are encouraged to apply now through December 1, 2020.

RISE Germany is a 10-12 week summer internship program for undergraduates in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering, and computer science.
