Supporting the Internationalization of Universities of Applied Sciences

DAAD is once again funding 16 projects on internationalization at universities of applied sciences. The selected projects prevailed in the current funding round of DAAD's "HAW.International" program. They will receive around eight million euros in funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) until 2025.

Universities of Applied Sciences are institutions with a focus on applied research and teaching that prioritize practical exercises and vocational requirements.

German Studies Research Grants

German Studies Research Grants are awarded for one to two months to highly qualified US and Canadian undergraduate and graduate students nominated by the professor supervising their German studies-relevant research.

For Master's Studies in Germany

Study Scholarships

Highly qualified final-year undergraduate students or those who have received an undergraduate degree in any discipline may apply for the DAAD Study Scholarship for a full master’s degree program at a German university or for study at a German university as part of a postgraduate or master’s degree program completed in the home country.

One-Year Research Grants

One-Year Research Grants are awarded for seven to twelve months to highly qualified candidates who have completed a master’s degree or Diploma, or, in exceptional cases, a bachelor’s degree by the time they begin their grant-supported research.

Short-Term Research Grants are awarded for one to six months to highly qualified candidates who will have completed a Master’s degree or Diploma, or in exceptional cases a Bachelor’s degree, by the time they begin their grant-supported research, or to those who have already completed a PhD (postdocs).

Internship Database Now Open!

RISE Germany for Undergraduate Students

RISE Germany is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, engineering and computer science. RISE Germany offers unique opportunities for bachelor degree students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a duration of three months (minimum stay ten weeks) during the summer.

Internship Database Now Open!

RISE Professional for Graduate Students

RISE (Research Internship in Science and Engineering) Professional offers research internships in Germany for up to six months to Master’s and PhD students (as well as qualifying undergraduates and recent graduates) from the US, Canada, Great Britain, or Ireland at companies and non-university research institutions with strong relations to industry. All participants receive a scholarship from DAAD and an additional stipend from their host company/institution to help cover living expenses.

University Summer Courses Offered in Germany for Foreign Students and Graduates

This program provides scholarships for undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students to attend a broad range of summer courses at German universities. These courses focus mainly on German language and literary, cultural, political and economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany. Extensive extracurricular programs complement and reinforce the core material.

From Animals to Robots: How Transatlantic Neuroscience Advances Engineering

As part of the NRW-USA Year 2023-2024, the University of Cologne New York Office together with the German Consulate New York, the German Research Foundation (DFG) North America, American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the German Center for Research and Innovation New York (DWIH) is hosting a panel discussion at the German House Auditorium in NYC featuring transatlantic research on how robotics and engineering can be advanced through neuroscience and the study of flexible animal behavior.

Scholarships for Graduate Students and Postdocs

The Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives

The Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives offers scholarships for graduate students and postdocs of all fields coming from the former Allied countries of World War II who want to study at a Berlin university or use research facilities in Berlin. Students and scholars from the United States are welcome to apply! The foundation will award 15 grants for the academic year 2024/25. The grants amount to 1,100 EUR for graduate and doctoral students; and 1,630 EUR for postdocs per month. The program will start on October 1, 2024 and end on July 31, 2025.

Germany's Youth Word of the Year

Each year, the German publishing company Langenscheidt gathers a jury to decide on the "Jugendwort des Jahres," or the Youth Word of the Year.

This year, the jury selected the word "goofy," which German youth use to describe someone who is clumsy, silly, or awkward in an amusing way.

It's the fourth year in a row that an English word has been chosen, after "smash," "cringe," and "lost." Check out this article by Deutsche Welle to see every Youth Word of the Year since 2010!
