German Cultural Traditions
Don't Forget to Put Out Your Boots!
December 6th is celebrated across Germany as Nikolaustag, or Saint Nicholas Day. On this day children young and old receive sweets and little presents from St. Nikolaus, a generous, kind, and somewhat mysterious figure. Freshly cleaned shoes or boots are placed by the door on the evening of December 5th (tonight!), and upon waking the next morning, the footwear can be found, magically filled with sweets, nuts, mandarins, and tiny presents from Saint Nikolaus. Nikolaus is separate from the Weihnachtsmann, or Santa Claus, who comes in the evening on the 24th of December.
Ach, du lieber Nikolaus,
komm ganz schnell in unser Haus.
Hab so viel an dich gedacht,
hast mir doch was mitgebracht?
