Giving Wings to Cross-Border Waterfowl Conservation

Welcome to Fall Flights

I’m enthused to introduce the second issue of the Fall Flights Newsline. We had a great response to the first issue! We emailed the first issue to nearly 400 individuals and had an opening rate of 72%. Thirty-six percent clicked on the link to state goals and 34% clicked on the link to learn more about the Fall Flights Program. The percentage of individuals that clicked on links for more information was well above the industry average. It demonstrated that states are eager to learn more about how their individual investments will contribute to larger waterfowl populations, support a host of migratory bird species, and provide more opportunities for all to experience the magic of migration. If we all do a little, we can accomplish a lot together!

Cheers,

Ryan Brown

Fall Flights Advisory Committee Chair

Director, Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources

We Hear You!

The Fall Flights Advisory Committee was heartened by the fact that directors, or their proxies, from 32 states participated in Fall Flights Listening Sessions.  This is what we heard:

  1. States support Fall Flights.
  2. States face challenges reaching their goals.
  3. Obstacles are not insurmountable. Successful states have used at least four different strategies to reach their goals.

Transforming Your Ideas into Action!

The Advisory Committee directed the Fall Flights Team to:

  1. Send a very short monthly email to keep directors and staff informed. We’re calling it the Fall Flights Newsline. This is the second issue.
  2. Create a values proposition document and PowerPoint slides that agency staff can use to communicate the importance of state investments in Fall Flights.
  3. Engage nongame partners and highlight the benefits of Fall Flights for other migratory birds in addition to waterfowl.
  4. Foster state “Fall Flights Teams of Champions,” including nongame staff, to support investments in Fall Flights. These teams will help prevent the loss of momentum during times of staff turnover and provide opportunities to identify connections to state nongame priorities focused on full annual life cycle bird conservation.
