Level 1 Arboretum Accreditation

The Hope Cemetery Board is proud to announce that it has recently been approved as a Level I Arboretum by the Morton Register of Arboreta.

This accreditation will heighten the Cemetery’s commitment to preserving this historic green space and encourage the local community to support us in this stewardship. Learn more about the Morton Register of Arboreta here.

Hope Cemetery Walking Tour

Kathy Ostrander Roberts, local author and Kennebunk Town Historian, is currently developing a walking tour of Hope Cemetery. Here’s an excerpt about one of the sites that will be featured on this educational and entertaining tour:

Receiving tombs were constructed to house the bodies of family members who passed away in the winter months when graves could not be dug. Their bodies were held here until spring when they could be buried in the ground. This elaborate receiving tomb was constructed in October of 1888 by wealthy resident Hartley Lord. Hartley was born in 1825 and died in 1912. He was initially a sea captain and eventually became a wealthy business owner in Boston. When he moved back to Kennebunk following his years in Boston, he constructed the magnificent Victorian mansion at 26 Summer Street.

Mark Your Calendars!

We invite you to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, May 1 at 10 am to celebrate the arboretum accreditation and the completion of construction on the new section of the cemetery called ‘The Meadow." This was designed in the rural garden style by local landscape designer, Lucinda Brockway of Past Designs. We look forward to having lots available for sale by mid-summer 2026.

On Saturday, May 2, in conjunction with May Day activities, we’ll be hosting award-winning author Jennifer Comeau, who will read her children’s book Inside of ME. Hope Cemetery’s copper beech tree was an inspiration for this book. More details to follow.

Visits to Hope Woods

In August, Friends of Hope Cemetery & Woods set up traffic tracking tech. While we always sensed the trails were well-loved, now we have data to back it up.

Here are some highlights:

Busiest month: October with 5,000+ visits

Quietest month: January 2026 with 1,000

So far this year: 2,400

Since August: 22,400

Note: The traffic counting app can track only the number of people who enter and exit Hope Woods. Our app can not distinguish a unique visitor from one who visits daily.

2025 Annual Appeal Success

Thanks to our generous donors, the 2025 Annual Appeal was a great success, with a 30% increase over 2024!

Donations are appreciated at any time. Gifts can be designated for specific purposes, and undesignated gifts will be applied where the need is greatest. Click here for more information.

Deep Blue Skies of Winter

Did you know that depth of color in winter blue skies can appear different from summer blue skies? Scientists explain it like this:

When sunlight hits our atmosphere, air molecules scatter the light into colors we recognize as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.

In autumn/winter, when humidity drops, air molecules can scatter the blue and violet light efficiently, making the sky color to appear as deep as cobalt. The lower angle of sunlight reaching us in winter also enhances the scattering effect. Conversely, when our air is humid and/or rich with pollen, our atmospheric molecules struggle to do a good job breaking out the hues of blue and violet. Result: the appearance of summery, pale blue skies.
