Watch our Facebook page for specific announcements.
First SCAC Scholarship Recipients Named
Two members of the Class of 2022 received the first SCAC scholarships as they graduated from Springboro High School.

John Yates and Katie Ling each received a one-year, $1,000 scholarship.

"The scholarship reflects the spirit and mission of the SCAC to help families in need to strive for self-sufficiency and improved quality of life for all family members," said Executive Director Wendy Grothjan.

Katie's award was based in part on her efforts to create Dresslings, an effort to collect gently used formal dresses to be offered to students in need next school year. Follow Dresslings on Instagram to see more.

Katie is relocating to Niagara Falls this summer. John will be attending Sinclair Community College.

Criteria for the scholarship include a GPA of at least 2.75 and either demonstrated financial need or volunteer service at SCAC. Applications are provided through the SHS guidance office.
Schools, Students Donate Project Proceeds
Springboro Schools wrapped up another busy year without forgetting their neighbors. Multiple food drives and other projects benefitted SCAC in the last weeks of the school year.

Springboro Junior High School Student Council (above) organized a St. Patrick’s Day Race to the Pot of Gold food drive. The proceeds filled several shopping carts thanks to the leadership of teacher Stacey Cavanaugh.

Meanwhile, Junior High Student Carson Donley (left) organized a school supplies collection as part of his requirements as a member of the National Junior Honor Society.

Dennis Elementary School fourth graders (below) completed a kindness project at the beginning of May. Under the direction of teacher Brooke Binder, the students collected plenty of diapers, laundry detergent and dryer sheets to stock our shelves.

Many thanks to Five Points Elementary third graders and teacher Ms. Paul who donated $100 collected in May as well. Five Points’ Student Council (far below) completed another great effort to help us at the end of the year. Thanks to Beth Waldo for her ongoing leadership.
Churches, Businesses Host Food Drives
Springboro’s churches continue their generous support of the SCAC with monthly food drives. Jubliee Church held its drive in mid May netting a truckload of items (below). They also gave us a substantial check.

The Point 937 Church brought nearly 100 boxes of food as part of its efforts to “Feed 500” every year (above). Southwest Church donated piles of supplies to be used to create summer food bags for kids who have been in the SCAC’s backpack program this year (right).

Fairhaven Church, which now has a campus on 73 in Springboro, presented us with an extremely generous check in late March.

Watkins Heating and Cooling also held a food drive for the pantry earlier this spring. We are so grateful for our community.
Easter Blessings Given in Remembrance
Anonymous donors remembered Rick Tincher by dropping off a box of Easter Blessings. The box included items from a 20-day list, similar to a reverse advent calendar donation received in Rick’s memory in December.

Our volunteer content manager used her snooping skills to learn that Rick was a 1975 graduate of Springboro High School and a former volunteer with the Clearcreek Fire Department. Rick was a member of several Springboro organizations who regularly support the SCAC, including the Optimists Club. He passed away January 15, 2021.

“It’s clear Rick touched many people,” said SCAC Executive Director Wendy Ford. “We’re not sure which of his family members or friends has crafted these donations. We’re so grateful to receive their generous remembrances.”
Universal Free Lunch Coming to an End
During the public health emergency created by COVID-19, the State of Ohio expanded free lunch service to include all students. That policy ends this summer.

When school resumes Aug. 16, families will again have to apply to receive free or reduced price lunches in Springboro Schools and most other districts.

Parents/guardians who feel their family will still qualify for free or reduced price meals past July 1, 2022 will have to submit a new application (paper or online via PaySchools). The application for 2022-23 will not be available until after July 1, 2022. Springboro Schools will share this link when available.

Those students currently eligible for free or reduced price meals will carry over for the first 30 days of school in the fall. After that, without a new approved application on file, the benefit will be cut off. Lunch prices for students with a free/reduced meal plan will again be $0.40. Paid lunch prices have not been determined yet.

New Program Helps with Internet Access
Recently, Congress created the FCC’s Affordable Connectivity Program, a $14 billion program that replaced the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program.

This investment in broadband affordability will help people get the internet connections they need for work, school, health care and much more.

Register Your Grocery Cards
You can help SCAC keep the food flowing in many different ways. If you shop at Kroger or Dorothy Lane Market, register your rewards cards so their Community Rewards and Good Neighbor Programs benefit SCAC.

These donations DO make a difference. Between Feb. 1 and April 30, more than $600 made its way to SCAC thanks to 103 households who shop at Kroger with registered cards.

Go online to www.kroger.com or www.dorothylane.com or visit customer service. A percentage of your total will be donated to SCAC every time you shop.
PayPal Allows Recurring Donations
Did you know: SCAC accepts donations via PayPal. Want to give regularly? Set up a recurring donation!

If you give from a bank account instead of a credit card, there are no fees! (We pay the fees which reduces your donation.) And it's secure!

Thanks to everyone who has already donated through PayPal and who set up recurring donations! We appreciate you!

If you prefer to send a check, you can mail it to Springboro Community Assistance Center, P.O. Box 1042, Springboro, Ohio 45066, or stop by with your donation during our distribution hours on Mondays between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
