FOSTER PARENT FOCUS | JANUARY 2024

Happy New Year to our Resource Family Team!

Article by Laura Mitchell, Executive Director of Foster Care

As we bid farewell to 2023, I want to take a moment to celebrate YOU and reflect on the incredible journey we have shared in our foster care services. We supported 939 children, teens and their families in 2023! Despite the challenges we faced, you (and our staff teams) have shown unwavering dedication, resilience, and love for the children and teens in our care.

In 2023, so many of you opened your homes and families to support children (376 licensed homes and 154 relatives/fictive kin) and 69 opened your first foster home license!  Because of you, Samaritas was able to support almost 1,000 children in 2023 who otherwise may not have had a safe place to sleep at night. Your willingness to embrace these new additions to your families has made a profound impact on their lives.

Samaritas commends resource parents who have actively engaged in training and support groups throughout the year. By collaborating with fellow resource parents, you

have created a strong network of support and shared experiences. Continue to lean on each other in 2024!

Being a resource parent comes with its fair share of challenges, but your resilience and determination have shone through! Whether it was navigating complex trauma and emotions, supporting children through difficult transition, or adapting to unforeseen circumstances, you have shown incredible strength and perseverance…this is noticed and celebrated within Samaritas offices.

The journey of foster care is a continuous one, filled with joys and challenges. Together, let’s enter 2024 with renewed energy and commitment to making a positive impact on children and their parents.

It is wonderful to share this journey with you, as tough as it is on some days. My heart is filled daily with stories of our collective impact on children and parents. THANK YOU!

Meet Shiann!

Having an outlet for her artistry is very important to Shiann. “She likes to express herself through her creativity,” says one of Shiann’s close adults. “She also enjoys art class and doing arts and crafts. Anything that allows Shiann to enjoy fun colors and express herself is key.

“Shiann is a very loving and social girl who really opens up once you get to know her,” says an adult close to her. “She really just wants to be loved by a family who is dedicated to her.” Shiann also is described as a bubbly young lady who makes friends easily.

Shiann needs a forever family with a single female parent or two female parents who are experienced and trauma trained. Shiann would do best as the only child in her new family, but she could be placed with younger siblings, too.

Meet Naomi!

It sounds as though Naomi wants to travel to the deepest ocean depths or the to the Earth’s core. She says the one place on Earth she most wants to visit is “somewhere that nobody has been to.” But wait until you hear Naomi’s reason why! “I love adventure.” It’s that sense of adventure and curiosity that must drive Naomi’s ambition to become a microbiologist in the future.

According to one of her close adults, “Naomi is strong-willed, smart, caring and passionate leader. She has a good sense of humor and makes friends quickly. Naomi loves to read and is a strong reader, which she is proud of. She has positive peer relationships. Naomi cares about others deeply and will stand up for them.”

Naomi would do well with one or two parents who are patient, experienced and trauma trained. She would benefit from having a strong, positive male presence in her new forever family. Her parent or parents should be strong advocates for the services that will help Naomi excel. She can be placed in a family with other children. Finally, her family must be open to letting Naomi maintain her sibling relationships.

Heroes of the Month

Kevin and Olga D. are known for their passion, sincerity, and warm-heartedness. Although the couple is new to foster parenting, they dove in and said yes to being a borrowed bed from another agency and welcomed three young children into their home so the siblings could stay together. With the support of family, friends, family, and agency, the children are thriving in Kevin and Olga's home with a balanced lifestyle, self-care, and humor in their daily routines.

After over 2,700 days in foster care, Jaylah was successfully adopted by her biological aunt. Jaylah’s biological aunt, Shana, fought for years to get placement of Jaylah and never gave up hope that they could be together again. Jaylah has overcome so much in her time in care and grown into a wonderful young woman. Jaylah successfully completed the Enhanced Foster Care program and her EFC team joined her on her adoption day.

Jaylah’s younger brother, Jaheim, is still looking for his forever family. Please take time to read about Jaheim and his story. Are you or anyone you know interested in learning more about Jaheim?

Heroes of the Month

We'd Rachel and Edward H. as our foster parents of the month! Rachel and Edward recently received placement of a 2-month-old baby girl and have adjusted well to this new transition. Rachel and Edward have consistently gone above and beyond to provide love, safety, and nurturing to children and have always been willing to lend a helping hand in any ways they can. We at Samaritas can’t say enough about how appreciative we are for the hard work and time our foster parents put into this experience, and the H. family is an excellent demonstration of this. Thank you so much to Rachel and Edward.

We had a great time at our holiday party for all our foster homes at the Prince of Peace Church in Portage last month. The turn out was great and the foster families enjoyed it! Santa came and talked to the kids, and we had games, a taco bar, and gifts.

HEROES OF THE MONTH

Beth and Mike R. began their fostering journey as empty nesters who wanted to help the children in their community. Their church congregation has many foster care connections and they felt it was their time to take part. Through this network of friendship and support, they have chosen to adopt a sibling pair placed in one of their foster community’s homes. Although their initial goal was reunification, they feel God has guided their path and led them toward adoption and permanency. Two children have been giving incredibly loving and kind parents this holiday. The R Family has a bright future ahead and we hope they can assist even more children in the future.

Gathering for the staff Christmas party was a much-needed relief after such a trying time of hospitalization's. Laughs were had and the staff enjoyed good food and conversation. It is with much hope that this team continues their good work in the new year, and we can continue to grow as an agency.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HARD WORK AND DEDICATION OVER THE YEARS!

On December 7 Refugee Foster Care invited our Refugee foster families and Independent Living Refugee youth and ILP programs to come celebrate the Holidays together! It is an annual tradition we all look forward to in Refugee Youth Services and this year we had over 100 people at a meal together at a local church. We are proud of the great care our team members took this year to get a diversity of foods to celebrate the cultures of Guatemala, Honduras, Afghanistan and more to represent the many countries where our youth have connections. The goal is to have our youth feel like a piece of their cultural traditions are with them this season.
