What's Happening at The Literacy & Learning Center?
The Literacy & Learning Center is thrilled to welcome back the community partners who have provided educational support over the years!

Programs were paused when The Literacy & Learning Center’s facility suffered extensive damage due to a frozen and burst pipe during the deep winter freeze. After a brief hiatus, programs resumed thanks to the tremendous generosity of the Highlands United Methodist Church for sharing their original fellowship hall with TL&LC to hold their after-school programs. During the transitional adjustment period, partner programs remained on hold, allowing time for students, volunteers, and staff to acclimate to the new space and the accompanying shifts in process.
Periodically since the early 2000s, Ricky Siegel has been volunteering at The Literacy & Learning Center, sharing his math skills with students of all ages who need a little extra one-on-one instruction.

Ricky has participated in TL&LC’s Individual Tutoring program, working predominantly with Highlands School K-12 students during after-school. He has also helped during the summer, which is available to any student seeking to prevent the “summer slide,” or to use the time to catch up or boost skills. His generosity has even extended to working with an adult studying for a nursing exam. This was years ago before adult tutoring was part of TL&LC’s programs, so something Ricky did of his own accord. He said that being a tutor was not a particular goal, but that he saw it as a way he could help. “I'm very glad for what I have been able to give to the community and the kids, and the satisfaction of seeing the students progress!”
Did you know that The Literacy and Learning Center offers free individual tutoring for adults? Lifelong learners and those interested in advancing their skills–for a wide array of reasons–can work on a schedule that best suits their daily routine. Our generous volunteers are here to help you gain new forms of knowledge!

Secondary education in the U.S. ends at age eighteen, well before the brain is fully formed, and long before most people fully understand their life goals and direction. Paths are often winding, but for many the journey is the destination, and the fulfillment of continual learning is the prize. Whether you are motivated to improve basic literacy, build skills for a new job, or simply learn for the love of it, TL&LC will work to pair you with a volunteer who matches those desired skills.
After almost four months, staff of The Literacy & Learning Center have finally returned to the office! Following the past Christmas holiday, staff returned on December 27 to find several inches of water filling the facility. Not alone in suffering weather-related damage, TL&LC was one of many in line for repairs, so the wait began.

At long last, all new floors have been installed, several walls repaired, and of course, the burst pipe replaced. Every item that was able to be saved was packed up and stored outside in a pod during the repair process. Once returned to the facility, all furniture and other items that were not disposed of have been thoroughly cleaned for mold and sanitized. Since April 24, staff have been busily unpacking, organizing, and setting up the facility. We still have plenty of work ahead, but being back in our building is, in a sense, the start to the new year!

After-school will continue to be held at the Highlands United Methodist Church for the remainder of the school year. Summer tutoring and camp will return to TL&LC.
