The Power of Story: Why Good Stories Captivate Us
Have you ever found yourself neglecting chores, ignoring texts, and staying up past bedtime because you couldn't put a book down? That's the magic of a truly captivating story. Novels can completely absorb us, transporting us to worlds far removed from our own. They awaken emotions, spark curiosity, and leave us feeling enlivened and enriched.
Take, for instance, Shelby Van Pelt's "Remarkably Bright Creatures," an author whose work is a testament to the power of storytelling. This captivating novel plunges us into the bustling world of an aquarium, where a marine biologist named Tova discovers an orphaned octopus with an uncanny knack for problem-solving. As Tova delves deeper into the octopus's intelligence, the story unfolds on multiple levels. We explore the fascinating world of marine life, the complexities of grief and loneliness, and the unexpected connections that can blossom between seemingly disparate beings.

Vickie Betts shares:
I enjoy being on the board of TL&LC and trying to help with the finances and fundraising, but getting in front of the kids is even more rewarding. I remember the days of raising kids while working full time, so being able to help with homework and give them a safe place to stay is so helpful to young parents. When the children are behind in work, it is even more important to be there for them.
Thank you, Vickie!

TL&LC Welcomes Pre-K Families
TL&LC hosted a Pre-K Open House and Meet the Teacher night on Wednesday, August 28, from 5 to 7 PM. The event allowed incoming Pre-K students and their families to familiarize themselves with the classroom environment and meet their teacher, Carolyn Middlebrooks.
It was a chance to ask questions, tour the facility, and get excited about the upcoming school year. They submitted some paperwork, learned more about our program and procedures, and received their daily folders and S'more snack mix, which ties into our camping-themed class. The evening fostered a sense of community and helped ease any first-day jitters for children and parents.
The event was a hit, with many children having so much fun they were reluctant to leave.
To learn more about the pre-K program or to apply for your child, contact Carolyn Middlebrooks at 828-626-0863 or CMiddlebrooks@TheLiteracyandLearningCenter.org.
