TL&LC Reopens Following Hurricane Helene

The Literacy & Learning Center is relieved and grateful to report that our facility and staff were unharmed during Hurricane Helene. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the individuals and organizations who worked tirelessly to restore the area's infrastructure.

We are also thankful for the safety of our students, families, and community members. While one of our students has had to relocate temporarily due to damage to their home, we eagerly await her return and will keep her in our thoughts until then.

TL&LC resumed normal operations on October 3rd. We are committed to providing our students with a safe and supportive learning environment and look forward to continuing our programs. 

The Literacy & Learning Center recently hosted a successful fall fundraiser featuring the renowned author Shelby Van Pelt. Van Pelt, author of the acclaimed New York Times Bestseller "Remarkably Bright Creatures," captivated the audience with her insights into literacy and her personal writing journey.

The Literacy & Learning Center's Pre-K program is thriving! After a month of learning, playing, and growing together, the children have settled into their routines and are adapting beautifully to their new classroom environment.

The Literacy & Learning Center is excited to announce the addition of Violeta Rojas Quintero to its team as a part-time Pre-K Assistant. Violeta brings a wealth of experience and a passion for early childhood education to her new role.

As a mother of four, Violeta understands the importance of providing a nurturing and supportive environment for young children. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to help guide and teach the youngest TL&LC students, equipping them with the social and academic skills they need to thrive in Kindergarten and beyond.

Due to many of the challenges families have faced recently, including but not limited to covid school shutdowns, not all children have had the early educational opportunities my daughters did. As a strong believer in the power, and lifelong benefits, of learning, particularly for reading, I am a hearty supporter of the mission of the Literacy and Learning Center. This includes intervention and assistance for those struggling students who might otherwise, without extra help, enter a spiral of falling behind their peers. For these children, particularly, a little extra help can go a long way in providing a lifetime of learning benefits.

We are currently seeking a highly motivated and experienced GED (General Education Development) Teacher to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for adult education, a strong background in GED instruction, and the ability to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

This new in-person course will be offered once a week for three months with the opportunity to teach additional GED courses based on performance and program needs.

TL&LC Hosts Successful Pre-K Parent Workshop

The Literacy & Learning Center recently held a parent workshop on Monday, September 23. This workshop was the first in a series of ongoing parent workshops designed to support the Pre-K program.

The workshop covered topics related to preschool development, including sleep, parenting tips, the importance of letting kids struggle, and life skills and manners. Parents had the opportunity to learn valuable information and connect with other families in the community.

Childcare and dinner were provided, ensuring parents could attend the workshop without worrying. TL&LC is committed to providing comprehensive support for Pre-K families and looks forward to hosting future workshops throughout the year.

TL&LC is pleased to offer a nurturing and comprehensive learning environment for children needing pre-K education. Through a play-based and child-centered approach, young learners will engage in activities that enhance their language and literacy skills, develop mathematical and scientific thinking, nurture social-emotional well-being, and promote physical growth.

Reminder: TL&LC has extended the age limit for pre-K! We are now accepting students who will turn 4 by January 2025!

• October is Fire Prevention Month. The fire department will visit the after-school students October 9 to talk about fire safety.

• Students will have the option to volunteer at the Eckerd Center on October 11.

- Sign your child up at TL&LC

- Students will ride the bus to the Eckerd Center from school

- Pick your child up by 5 pm at the Eckerd Center

• After-school students will carve pumpkins October 24. Families are welcome to drop in anytime between 4:40 - 6:30 pm. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.
