Join the CFAR in giving back this World AIDS Day

Colorful flyer showing date of D3C World AIDS Day event, December 6th from 6-8pm

As we reflect on gratitude and giving during this season, we also recognize the importance of acknowledging the history of Thanksgiving, including the colonial impact on Indigenous peoples and their lands and ongoing systemic inequities and health disparities. In this spirit, we are reminded of the power of collective action to address inequities and support human rights.

On December 1st -- World AIDS Day -- and throughout the month of December, we encourage you to join CFAR colleagues in a community volunteering effort. By giving your time to support housing, food access, or health resources, you can contribute to the wellbeing of people living with HIV and our broader community. There’s still time to plan an activity with your team! Consider volunteering with organizations like Habitat for Humanity, Urban Ministries of Durham, or the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC. Together, we can honor the spirit of giving and advocate for a more just and equitable future.

Another way you can support individuals living with HIV is by attending the D3C's World AIDS Day commemoration on December 6th. Read more in the Events section below or on the CFAR website.

Kathy Link recognized with Research Support Excellence Award

Group of Clinical Core staff, with Kathy Link in center holding award

Congratulations to Kathy Link for being recognized with the Department of Medicine’s Research Support Excellence Award!

The Research Support Award recognizes sustained excellence in the administrative and programmatic support of research studies in the Department of Medicine. These staff members help to manage complex regulatory thickets, navigate byzantine internal systems, balance competing priorities, create order from chaos, connect team members, identify latent creative solutions, and ultimately enhance the rigor and the feasibility of research projects in the Department of Medicine.

As the CFAR Clinical Core Regulatory Manager, Kathy has provided support to many CFAR research projects and beyond.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Kathy!

Congratulations to the world's most highly-cited scientists!

Web of Science released its ranking of the world’s most highly-cited scientists, telling us who makes up the top 1 percent of the world’s scientists. These are the authors of influential papers that other scientists point to when making their arguments. The list includes 23 Duke scholars, including two CFAR researchers! Congratulations to Priyamvada Acharya and Bart Haynes!

Welcoming our newest (and littlest) CFAR member

Congratulations and well wishes to Lynn Lin and family, who recently welcomed baby Leo! Lynn Lin is an Associate Director of the CFAR Quantitative Sciences (QS) Core.

HIV Projects needed - work with a funded Quantitative Summer Intern!

Quantitative Methods in HIV logo

The Duke Quantitative Methods in HIV/AIDS training grant is again offering paid internships for Summer 2025 (May July). Now in its 7th year, the summer internship is designed for graduate students from quantitative disciplines to conduct quantitative research on HIV/AIDS projects.

We are seeking graduate students in quantitative disciplines, including but not restricted to mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science and engineering, to conduct HIV/AIDS research. Interns will be jointly mentored by an HIV research scientist and a quantitative faculty member, and will gain hands-on team science experience among some of the leading research groups in HIV/AIDS. Please share information about the internship to anyone who might be interested. Application deadline is Sunday, January 12, 2025.

Work with an Intern!

We expect candidates with diverse backgrounds that can support different types of projects (clinical, social and behavioral sciences, health services research, immunology and vaccine development, etc.). Past projects can be found on our website.

We are looking for project proposals from Duke HIV/AIDS investigators. The interns and their mentorship are funded by the R25 grant.

If you have a research idea or data collected, we would like to work with you! Please complete this brief form if you have a project idea or possible project idea, and someone from our team would be happy to meet with you to help craft a summer internship project.

Share the internship application information and submit a project idea.

Apply for the Salk Institute Rising Stars Symposium

We are pleased to announce the second annual Rising Stars Symposium at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. This symposium is intended to recognize the accomplishments of outstanding postdoctoral associates who identify as underrepresented in the scientific workforce and/or who have contributed significantly to advancing issues related to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI), and to develop novel opportunities for recruiting faculty candidates from historically minoritized and underrepresented backgrounds to the institute. This year, the symposium will span 1.5 days. The dates for the symposium are set for May 13-14, 2025

The purpose of the symposium is to learn about the exciting research that is being conducted by postdoctoral associates who are at the forefront of their respective fields, and who either identify as underrepresented in the STEM workforce and/or who have made significant contributions to JEDI. The symposium is intended to expose the candidates to the science and opportunities at the Salk Institute, and to develop novel avenues for faculty recruitment.

We are seeking applications from postdocs in years ~3-4 of their training, prior to their formal entry into the job market. The selected candidates will visit Salk and have the opportunity to:

  • Present their novel research in a Symposium setting and interact with other trainees and fellow colleagues who are at the forefront of their respective fields.
  • Engage with and meet Salk faculty one-on-one and over dinner and be mentored after the symposium by a designated Salk faculty member who will be paired with each candidate.
  • Learn about the institute, expose them to the ongoing developments at Salk, and inform them of upcoming faculty recruitment opportunities

Researchers at the Salk Institute study a range of topics, and thus we are not limiting applicants to any specific field. The work should simply fall broadly within the scope of “Biological Studies.” All costs associated with the symposium will be covered the Salk Institute.

The deadline for applications is Friday, January 10, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. PT
