A Message from the Director

I hope you enjoy our new format, designed to provide more information each month. We are adding several new regular features – this month you’ll see the first installment of “How you can make a difference” in the article on Ohio Hospitality, and “Our Ohio Partners” featuring events and initiatives of organizations affiliated with GEO. In upcoming issues, watch for “Business Member of the Month.” If you have an idea for an article or a feature, let us know.

Thanks for your continued support!

The GEO Update
On the Road
The second edition of our Meet, Learn, and Share gatherings took place at the Athens well-known Little Fish Brewery. At this gathering, attendees were motivated to discuss topics about: job training and opportunities for solar installers as well as the threat of exceeding demand, financing residential solar projects, and the continuing development and evolution of electric vehicles. Some of the local groups that contributed to the discussion were Solar United Neighbors of Ohio, Rural Action, Ohio United, and the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs at Ohio University.
For the third edition of our Meet, Learn, and Share event, we chose Land Grant Brewery as our destination because of the numerous sustainability initiatives they take to be a green organization. Some of Land Grant’s sustainability actions include: local sourcing, recycling spent grains to Hoffman’s Farm & Greenhouse, and sending spent yeast to be used a fertilizer at a variety of local gardens. The conversation of this even centered around the ideas of creating education initiatives in Columbus, including sustainability measures in architecture, interconnectedness between solar projects to foster efficiency, and the ongoing battler for Ohio’s renewable energy portfolio standards. Groups with representatives at this invent include PUCO, Mid Ohio Regional Planning Committee, Sierra Club, Go Sustainable, and AR Tech.

Ohio Hospitality Goes Green!
Three hotels in eastern Ohio have pledged to become carbon neutral! Garland Hospitality, owner of the properties, has contracted with Wind Turbines of Ohio LLC to install a 100 Kw Northern Power Wind Turbine and a 100 KW solar system at each of three sites – The Shoenbrunn Inn and Conference Center in New Philadelphia, the Garland Hotel in New Concord, and the Quality Inn in Cambridge. These technologies constitute a multi-million-dollar investment in the communities and have the ability to generate new revenue from residents and visitors to the surrounding area. Today’s travelers are looking for ways to offset their carbon footprint while still enjoying first class accommodations, and organizations like GEO choose event locations that demonstrate a commitment to renewable energy and energy efficiency.
How you can make a difference?

Be Vocal: Let local officials in your area know that you support these installations and want to see the enactment of renewable-friendly policies for development projects.
Be Discerning: Ask about a hotel or conference center’s energy and sustainability policies and reward those who have the vision to invest in a cleaner, healthier future.
