Hi Neighbors,
It has been over ten weeks since I have been in office. I have continued my commitment to start strong, but I know much work still exists.
I have updated our website with resources that connect you with my office and city services. I have hosted 12 community events over these past few weeks, attended several neighborhood meetings, including the growing Tully Road-Eastridge Business Association, and have several more community events this month, including our April Community Coffee at Cadence and my virtual office hours via Zoom!
As your City Councilmember, I want to do everything to improve our community. Sometimes difficult policy decisions need to be made. Although we may not agree on every issue, I am still committed to our community. I will do my best and work with residents at every opportunity.
I have also received several emails and calls on many issues related to traffic safety and blight to the pedestrian bridge between Park Estates Way and Yerba Buena Road. Currently, for safety reasons, this bridge is closed. Rest assured I am working with City staff to see how we can make Yerba Buena Road accessible to the neighborhood.
Our work at City Hall has also kept us busy. From updates on our digital equity access, discussions on the FY 2023-2024 City budget, pavement maintenance plans for the next three years (2023-2025), wage theft prevention, and more.
I deeply care about our community, and I am devoted to working for the residents of our community. Please get in touch with my office for any questions, concerns, or city service needs.

City Roads Update
These are essential community infrastructure projects that have long been backlogged or limited in scope but have since been made possible thanks to funding from the voter-approved Measure T (2018) and SB 1 (2017) passed by the state. I took great pride in having fought for and supported this funding that has made our much-needed road work possible over the years, and I look forward to its completion in our community.
The following are some notable projects in District 8 to be completed this year:
1. Aborn Rd from Ruby Ave to Murillo Ave– Sealing
2. Fowler Rd and Classico Ave from San Felipe Rd through Evergreen Village Sq and Ruby Ave - Sealing
3. Silver Creek Valley Rd from Heyller Ave to Yerba Buena Rd - Sealing
4. Tully Rd from Capitol Expwy to Alvin Ave - Sealing
5. Yerba Buena Rd from San Felipe Rd to Villa Vista Rd - Resurfacing
6. Local and Neighborhood Streets throughout Brigadoon Way and Daniel Maloney Way
7. Local and Neighborhood Streets throughout Coldwater Dr and Hayworth Dr
Several major and local streets are also announced for maintenance through 2025. Please view the GIS Pavement Projects Storymap for all updates and information.

Congratulations to Christina Bui, I was honored to recognize her outstanding leadership in the Tully Road-Eastridge Business Association. As a result of her hard work, she has helped shape partnerships in key offices like the Office of Economic Development, SJPD, and City Council to ensure this corridor has its fair share of City investments.

City Council Update
I also worked on strengthening our wage theft protection on 04/11. This policy revision protects workers through an expanded requirement for Collective Bargaining Agreements. Currently, workers are often left to defend themselves with limited success. I believe in empowering our workers to combat wage theft because no one else will.
I am also happy to announce that some in our community will now have Community WiFi through SJ Access! The Mt. Pleasant attendance area WiFi activation was announced at the 04/11 Council meeting. Additionally, the Silver Creek High School attendance area is planned for completion in June 2023. I believe equalizing the playing field so our most vulnerable communities have an opportunity to succeed in life should be one of our priorities. Digital access is a basic need for everyone to stay connected. I appreciate the staff's work on advancing digital equity, and I look forward to further closing the digital gap for all residents in the capital of Silicon Valley.
Finally on Tuesday, March 28, the San Jose City Council unanimously approved the Wat Khmer Kampuchea Krom Temple in District 8. I worked with residents, neighbors and the community on conditions that incorporated their concerns. I appreciate the time that residents spent making their voices on this topic. These decisions are never easy because of the balancing of concerns of two valid values; a community seeking a gathering place of worship, and neighbors who are understandably concerned about the impact of the project.
I made a commitment to engage the community as best as I can, and while we may not agree on every decision, I am committed to continue to work with you.

District 8 Economic Vitality Small Business Grant
The program was launched on April 10, 2023, In partnership with the Tully Road Eastridge Business Association Leadership group (TREBA). The program aims to uplift and assist the under-resourced small business communities primarily consisting of immigrant-owned, women-owned, and minority-owned businesses in District 8. The San Jose District 8 Economic Vitality Small Business Grant Program will offer grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to San Jose District 8’s small businesses experiencing financial hardship. The grant recipients may use the funds for business improvement activities such as property improvement (interior/exterior), buying equipment, purchasing inventory, etc. A lottery will be used to award the grants. Responsible Landlord Engagement Initiative
I am delighted to share that the Responsible Landlord Engagement Initiative (RLEI) program is back to helping San Jose residents to keep their neighborhoods safe and healthy. Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County continues to be the host agency of the program. RLEI empowers neighbors to resolve problem properties affecting their quality of life through community building, organizing, and mediation strategies. RLEI helps the residents to engage negligent landlords inviting them to turn into responsible landlords.
The return of RLEI means to the community that they have access to a unique and efficient way to resolve problem properties in partnership with the city's traditional means and resources.
