Hi Neighbors,

Last week, I rounded out my first 100 days as your City Councilmember. In this short time, I have held four community coffees and five community events, including a budget breakfast and a town hall with Congressman Jimmy Panetta. I value and appreciate communication with my neighbors especially your input. These events provide opportunities for residents to voice their concerns and ideas directly to me and my staff.

In addition to these events, I organized over 4 neighborhood dumpster days and 14 community cleanups. I am proud to say that we have removed over 140 tons of garbage and collected over 500 bags of trash from our neighborhoods. I am committed to improving the blight concerns that many community members have shared with me and promoting environmental stewardship. At City Hall, I have advocated for policies that benefit the community. This includes advocating for a stronger wage theft policy and improvements at Lake Cunningham -- a jewel of East San Jose. I have also prioritized a robust community engagement process for the Pleasant Hills Golf Course development as part of my commitment to the long-term success of our community.

My first 100 days in office have been marked by a strong commitment to community engagement and tangible progress on important issues. This is only the beginning, and we have a lot more work to do, together!

As always, I have a few upcoming events, check them out below alongside our recent events, budget update, and announcements!

Thank you for your continued support and please get in touch with my office for any questions or city service needs.

Best,

Domingo Candelas

Fiscal Year 2023-2024 City Budget Briefing and Updates

The City Budget process has picked up in the last few weeks. This month, I attended a series of impactful Council budget briefing discussions led by our city budget department.

I am committed to continue supporting a budget environment where our community has the opportunity to provide their input. To that extent, we want to hear from you at our upcoming District 8 Community Budget Meeting. I am co-hosting this meeting with Mayor Matt Mahan at the East Valley Family YMCA on Thursday, June 8th.

This year’s budget includes many services that provide opportunities for our youth and neighborhoods to thrive. For the next few weeks, the City of San José will produce a series of Facebook posts that reflect the proposed budget services and programs.

Below are a few highlights that breakdown some of the proposed budget priorities. As part of this work, I will also be sharing my Budget Document proposals to improve District 8 specifically.

District 8 Economic Vitality Small Business Grant

The program was launched on April 10, 2023, In partnership with the Tully Road Eastridge Business Association Leadership group (TREBA). The program aims to uplift and assist the under-resourced small business communities primarily consisting of immigrant-owned, women-owned, and minority-owned businesses in District 8.

The San Jose District 8 Economic Vitality Small Business Grant Program will offer grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to San Jose District 8’s small businesses experiencing financial hardship.

The grant recipients may use the funds for business improvement activities such as property improvement (interior/exterior), buying equipment, purchasing inventory, etc. A lottery will be used to award the grants. This will ensure that every applicant has an equal chance. Priority will be given to businesses that have not received federal, local, or State of California pandemic loans or grants.

City of San Jose Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee Recruitment

Want to have a hand in creating a more walk-, roll-, and bike-friendly San José? Apply to join the San José Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC)! The BPAC helps guide City staff on how to better accommodate the needs of residents who primarily walk, roll, and/or bike. And committee members report to and work directly with DOT staff.

To be eligible, you must live or work in San José and complete an application. All applications are due by Friday, June 9 and must be submitted to [email protected] Due to limited seats and to better reflect San José’s diverse population, applications from council districts not currently represented on BPAC will be prioritized. Visit bit.ly/dot-bpac to download an application and learn more about the BPAC.

If appointed, a member would serve a two-year term.

BPAC meets approximately ten times per year, typically on the fourth Monday of the month. The City has recently changed their COVID-19 meeting policy and the BPAC now meets in person at City Hall.
