February 20, 2022
Dear Members of the St. Martin’s Community,
As a result of the discussions initiated by the Vestry and Board last week, our Rector has obtained a significant acceleration of the relaxation of masking requirements at SMES through his conversations with the diocese.
- Masks will continue as part of the uniform requirement for all students on Tuesday, February 22.
- As of this Wednesday morning, February 23, the diocese concurs with our moving to optional masking in classrooms provided the State Board of Education votes to relax its mask mandate as anticipated on February 22. Masks would still be required in large indoor gatherings to include Mustang Rally, Chapel, and in hallways between classes in the Middle School area.
- As of Monday morning, February 28, we will move to optional masking throughout the school building, provided that the case rate continues to decline as expected.
The Board of Trustees is very appreciative of the efforts made by the Rev. Matthew and the Vestry to obtain this early relaxation of masking requirements for your children.
I would ask that each of you take the time to talk with, and to listen to, your children’s concerns regarding masking. Another of the great values of Episcopal education is to value time for spiritual reflection and the intentional teaching of wisdom, compassion, and humility. While many of your children will be happy to be without masks, some may remain cautious and decide to remain masked for some time. Please help your children understand and respect the feelings and choices of their classmates on this issue.
Since the beginning of the pandemic we have kept the well-being of the entire St. Martin’s school community at the forefront of every decision. The faculty, staff, and trustees care deeply about the children you place in our care and strive always to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment.
Let us make this an opportunity for them to continue to grow in Confidence, Compassion and Character.
Faithfully yours,
