Summer/Fall 2025 Newsletter

Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies (BWBS) is officially past the 2025 Mid-Season mark (results coming soon!), and the team is excited to share updates on our latest work, news coverage, events, presentations, and the growing list of ambassadors joining our efforts for safer whales, cleaner air, and a quieter ocean.

Whale Atlas: A Mariners Guide to Whale-Safer Shipping is Live!

California Marine Sanctuary Foundation (CMSF) and BWBS are proud to introduce the Whale Atlas, an easy-to-use mapping tool for whale-safer navigation.

CMSF and the Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies team developed an online platform to enhance how mariners access and engage with the information critical to understanding and cooperating with existing global whale-protection measures when planning international transits.

Context: The World Shipping Council has a Whale Chart Report navigational aid that is a “global resource offering critical navigational coordinates and concise graphics to identify routing measures and areas subject to static speed restrictions designed to protect whales and other cetaceans.” To make this valuable information more interactive and user-friendly, CMSF and members of the BWBS team created a new online portal that showcases digitized (and downloadable) whale conservation zones and protection measures relevant to maritime shipping activities. The map includes:

  • Global Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) zones, Areas to be Avoided (ATBA) and Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS)
  • Zone designations and parameters, including which whale species it protects
  • Seasonality of the whale protections
  • Specifics of the measures (what speeds to slow to; ship class or size targeted)

The map is live and available on our new and improved Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies Program website Resources page.

Welcoming New Ambassadors

So far this year, we have welcomed 16 new Ambassadors, and since our last newsletter, we're excited to welcome: Port of Oakland, Patagonia, Toad&Co, Matilija Wine, Pacific Stoneworks, ShipCo Transport, and Seaspan Ship Management.

Ambassadors include consumer goods, brands, ports, and logistics companies that work with at least one of the program’s enrolled shipping carriers. They show support for participating shipping lines’ efforts, help amplify the program, and drive increased awareness around responsible shipping opportunities. For the full list of our Ambassadors see here.

Know a company or port who might be interested in joining the program? Please email becca@CaliforniaMSF.org for more information.
