September 2019
From the Director

This year Catholic Charities is celebrating our 100th year anniversary of service and ministry in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. I am proud of the wonderful service Catholic Charities has provided for those in need. Each one of our programs provides a respectful atmosphere to those who come in our doors and Catholic Charities Bloomington and Becky's Place are no exception.

As the executive director, I am challenged daily with finding funding, staff and volunteers to help in our mission. I am reminded, through our church teachings and Holy Scripture, to rely on God's grace and abundance. I reflect yet again on the story of the loaves and fishes in Mark 6 and thought about how often I feel like one of the disciples. Imagine being one of the disciplines and all you have to feed thousands of hungry people is five measly loaves of bread and two fish!

Like the disciples, we might have been inclined to say, "Let them take care of their own needs; we don't have enough resources." But that is not what Jesus asks us to do. Jesus prayed with the right intention - to do his Father's work to care for his vulnerable brothers and sisters in need.

Let's encourage one another to Be The Light of God's love through all our ministries of charity. Let's pray and act to support those who are in need in our communities. You are the reason that people in our communities can get the help and support they need. You make a difference!

Teen Rises Above Depression and Anxiety

14-year-old Susan was referred to Catholic Charities by Riley Physicians because of depression and anxiety. She found it hard to function due to feelings of sadness, hopelessness and low self-esteem. She was struggling to find ways to cope with these overwhelming emotions and had turned to self-harm. Through therapy at CCB, Susan was able to learn different coping skills for her depression and anxiety. She could comfortably share with her therapist, something she had not experienced from other adults in her life. She did intensive work on improving her self-esteem through cognitive-behavioral techniques and positive affirmations. A year later, Susan can regulate her emotions in healthy ways. She can better understand her emotions and has a wide range of coping skills for when challenges arise. She continues to work on maintaining a healthy self-esteem and sense of self-worth.

Overcoming Grief and Drugs at Becky's Place

Mary came to Becky's Place at 65 years old after a very difficult period in her life. Two close family members had recently committed suicide and she was struggling with grief. She then turned to drugs to cope with the loses she had experienced. Mary came to Becky's Place with no home, family or energy to overcome the challenges in her life. Thanks to the dedicated staff at Becky's Place, Mary slowly started to get back on her feet. Becky's Place assisted her with getting Social Security benefits and working toward finding a place to live. Recently, Mary moved into her own apartment and is looking forward to continuing the life she had once thought lost. She thought she was down and out but thanks to the help of Becky's Place, she was able to over the challenges in her life and start anew.
