Updates on Variants and Vaccines

For some viruses, the only constant is change. Influenza viruses and coronaviruses are examples of those that are constantly changing. Last week, CDC Director Mandy Cohen said in a podcast that new COVID booster shots will be rolled out in late September (pending FDA authorization). In June, the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) met to discuss and make recommendations for SARS-CoV-2 strain(s) for updated COVID-19 vaccines for use in the United States beginning in the fall of 2023. The committee unanimously voted that the vaccine composition be updated to a monovalent COVID-19 vaccine with an XBB-lineage of the Omicron, preferring the XBB.1.5 variant. (Reference link)

According to WHO as of today, September 5th, there is no variant of concern (VOC) and there are 3 currently circulating variants of interest (VOIs): XBB.1.5, XBB.1.16, and EG.5. (Reference link)
