Updates on Variants and Vaccines

For some viruses, the only constant is change. Influenza viruses and coronaviruses are examples of those that are constantly changing. Last week, CDC Director Mandy Cohen said in a podcast that new COVID booster shots will be rolled out in late September (pending FDA authorization). In June, the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) met to discuss and make recommendations for SARS-CoV-2 strain(s) for updated COVID-19 vaccines for use in the United States beginning in the fall of 2023. The committee unanimously voted that the vaccine composition be updated to a monovalent COVID-19 vaccine with an XBB-lineage of the Omicron, preferring the XBB.1.5 variant. (Reference link)

Refer to the figure below for currently circulating variants in US:

According to WHO as of today, September 5th, there is no variant of concern (VOC) and there are 3 currently circulating variants of interest (VOIs): XBB.1.5, XBB.1.16, and EG.5. (Reference link)

The pseudoviruses are excellent tools for studying the viral entry of host cells and for developing vaccines. We have non-replicable MLV-based pseudoviral particles (with firefly luciferase reporter) for all VOCs, VOIs, and VUMs (variants under monitoring) for coronaviruses:

SARS-CoV-2 pseudoviruses

Wuhan-Hu-1 (the original strain, or 614D), 614G,

Omicron, BA2, BA.2.75, BA.2.12.1, BA.4, BA.4.7, BA.5, BA.5.9,

BF.7, BJ.1, BQ.1, BQ.1.1, CA.3.1, CH.1.1, CM.2,

XBB, XBB,1,5, XBB.1.16, XBB.1.16.2, XBB.1.16.6, XBB.2.3, XBF, EG.5.1,

and other (including older) variants;

SARS-1 pseudovirus

MERS pseudovirus

We also have the non-replicable MLV-based pseudoviruses with beta-Lactamase fusion reporter for some of the SARS-CoV-2 variants. This reporter system enables direct and fast detection of infection in the assays. If you're interested, please inquire: [email protected].
