UPDATING YOUR DATA WITH PREFERRED GENDER, ORIENTATION & LIVED NAME

To: All students

Oct. 26, 2022

Dear Students,

You recently received an email from Vice Chancellor Saenz outlining campus efforts to advance inclusive excellence by not only supporting the transgender and gender non-binary community, but by respecting and celebrating deeply held identities of students, faculty, staff, and alumni in support of the Gender Recognition and Lived Name Policy.

To this end, I am excited to announce that UC Merced students can now make updates to their Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation, and Lived Name within Connect, My Merced, and then clicking on the BioDemo link.

LIVED NAME

Students can provide UC Merced with a lived first, middle, and last name for use on all university-issued documents and communications. This includes transcripts, diplomas, CatCard, Catcourses, and more. Lived name will also be used in information systems.

GENDER IDENTITY

Students will be able to provide UC Merced with one of seven equally recognized genders:

  • Female
  • Male
  • Trans Female
  • Trans Male
  • Genderqueer
  • Non-Binary
  • Different Identity

SEXUAL ORIENTATION

Students will also be able to provide UC Merced with one of six sexual orientations:

  • Asexual
  • Heterosexual
  • Gay
  • Lesbian
  • Bisexual
  • Other

If you have any questions related to this exciting announcement, please visit this website or reach out to Erin Webb, University Registrar, at ewebb2@ucmerced.edu.

Sincerely,

Charles Nies, Ph.D.

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs
