The Town of Carbondale is moving forward with a town-wide water meter upgrade project modernizing the community’s water system while improving efficiency, accuracy, and customer service for all utility customers.
This project was approved by the Board of Trustees at the May 27, 2025 meeting, with an Opt-Out Policy later approved on January 13, 2026. Together, these actions allow the Town to begin replacing all existing water meters with upgraded meters and endpoints that support Advanced Metering Infrastructure, also known as AMI.
The new AMI water meters securely transmit water usage data directly to the Town’s utility system. This technology eliminates the need for drive-by meter readings and allows the Town to collect more reliable and accurate water usage information. These improvements help reduce labor costs, vehicle wear, and fuel use, while also supporting better long-term planning, including future rate structure updates. Customers can register online to access their water meter accounts and view the usage data.
Customers who prefer not to have their water meter replaced with the upgraded AMI system may choose to opt out of the AMI system. Additional opt out information and application can be found on the Deployment of New Water Meters page.
The Town’s goal is to replace all water meters over the next three years. Customers can easily schedule their meter replacement appointment online.
