April 2021
Upham Woods and Day of the Badger
Greetings, dedicated Upham Woods supporters,

2021 is starting off on a much more positive note! Not only are we celebrating 80 years of Upham Woods in 2021, we are also pleased to announce our participation in the Day of the Badger, the day of giving observed by the University of Wisconsin, starting at 10:12am on Tuesday, April 6.

During the pandemic, our talented program staff was able to pivot and adapt many of our programs to a virtual platform so that we could still reach many students despite their inability to be onsite with us.

While we are entering a more hopeful time, many classrooms are still unable to schedule overnight field trips at Upham Woods. Support these classrooms with your generous donation on the Day of the Badger. Each donation of $160 provides one virtual Upham Woods Experience for a grateful classroom.
Let's bring Upham to every classroom
until every classroom can come to Upham.
Counselor Training
Upham Woods staff facilitated the first virtual Counselor Training Discussion Session on Zoom for teen leaders to discuss and connect. The "ice" was broken with an activity where counselors reflected on their favorite camp memories and allowed counselors to meet each other and start the conversation about camp. Participants were then placed in breakout rooms to discuss specific camp topics such as creating an inclusive environment for campers, asking for help at camp, and showing campers that they care. Then Upham staff facilitated games and songs to build moral and create silliness in the group, because camp is about coming out of our shell and being silly and having fun!
Research 2021 Equinox Storytelling Summit
Dr. Justin Hougham, Isabelle Herde, and Zoë Goodrow participated in the Equinox Storytelling Summit – a virtual event led by Rudy Molinek, a PhD student in the Nelson Institute and geology department at UW-Madison. Rudy was funded to put this event together by the Humanities Exchange (HEX) program at UW-Madison. There were 26 participants. Scholar and author Curt Meine delivered the keynote story, which was and was followed by 5 additional presenters sharing their stories. Participants were invited to make observations of something in nature, write a story about their observations, and then share the story at the event - or they could also enjoy the event by just listening.
