On July 7th, thirty-two campers and six counselors eagerly arrived at Upham Woods for the first session of Open Enrollment Summer Camp at Upham Woods. The six days of camp were filled with lots of laughs, sunshine, camp activities, and even some learning! The campers got to know each other in a unique way by using some cool science tools we keep in a mysterious golden box called a DOTS (Digital Observation Technology Skills) kit. Some of the tools include an infrared thermometer that measures the temperature of objects, a kestrel weather meter that measures the wind speed, and even a digital microscope! They had the chance to use these tools again on their all-day Blackhawk Island adventure. Each group of campers created a scientific story skit that they shared with the rest of camp their Wednesday evening campfires. Campers also had the chance to shoot arrows at targets with balloons attached, paddle and fish on the WI River, meet some of Upham’s education animals, complete team building activities, and play water games. The oldest campers had the option of enjoying a unique paddle at dawn on Friday. We had so much fun with this splendid group of kids, and we hope they will join us again next year!
