August at Upham Woods
Summer is wrapping up at Upham Woods, but we are so grateful for all the new friends that visited us in August!

Naturalists on a Quest to Sheboygan County
Brandon and Anna, our two summer Naturalists, were given a unique opportunity to travel to the Sheboygan County Quest Stops.

The Wisconsin Coastal Guide is a virtual program launched in collaboration with Wisconsin Sea Grant and supported by UW Madison that aims to increase awareness of natural, cultural, and historical coastal issues both locally and statewide.
With the virtual quests, you can travel throughout a county to stops that have a significant importance to the area. From there you will test your knowledge of each stop by answering a question and will earn a certificate for completion at the end. Kohler-Andrae State Park was Brandon’s favorite stop. He said how he enjoyed seeing the sand dunes and Lake Michigan. Anna’s favorite stop was Breakwater Lighthouse because it was very mystical while they were there, and the fog added to the experience. Brandon and Anna said seeing these stops in person was a beautiful adventure and a perfect way to spend a summer day. They both want to visit these places again soon!
See you in September!
Thank you to all who have supported us this past year and this past summer. To those of you who were able to come out to Upham Woods this summer, it was wonderful to have you! Perhaps you were able to connect to our virtual resources this summer instead, like Camp Counselor Training or the Wisconsin Great Lakes Quests on the Wisconsin Coastal Guide. However you connected with us, we appreciate your support and your collaboration.
A lot happened this past summer! We had our first American Camp Association accreditation visit! We should know if we are accredited for Summer 2022 soon. We operated dozens of hours of synchronous virtual programs with partners and we supported conservation and exploration at Upham Woods as well.
As the fall approaches and with it new opportunities, we want to invite you to our 80th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday September 11, where author and birder, Carly Lincoln, will lead a bird hike around the woods here. We will also have food by local caterer, Wild Bearies that focuses on education and community connections to Indigenous cuisine! You can learn more and register for this free event by clicking here.
Lastly, we want to let you know that our Program Director, Isabelle Herde, is leaving her position at Upham Woods. We wish her the best in her next adventure and we assure you of a smooth transition as we prepare for the year ahead.
Community Day in the Upper Dells
Upham Woods hosted a Community Day for families to come out and explore, have fun, and learn together! Participating families were present and started the day with archery. From there, Carly Lincoln, published author and bird enthusiast, led a bird hike through the Riverbend Trail. As we hiked, we listened for bird calls and used the app Merlin Bird ID to confirm the bird calls. Wacky Water Critters was our last activity for the day and the families enjoyed this hands-on learning experience. They even got to see Egor being put back in his tank as a bonus!
How We Spent Our Summer
Upham Staff has been enjoying this summer exploring near and far. We are very fortunate to be safely programming with day groups onsite, while spending our summer vacations exploring new places. Every team member can agree that being outdoors is the best way to spend time!
  • Isabelle Herde celebrated graduating with her Master's in Environmental Conservation by backpacking 20 miles along Grand Island, Michigan on Lake Superior.
  • Jennifer Loveland went camping at Hartman Creek State Park.
  • Anna Boppart hiked Mt. Ida in Colorado on her vacation.
  • Brandon Springer hiked through the beautiful Rocky Arbor State Park.
  • Johanna Desprez spent time in Duluth exploring ports along Lake Superior.
  • Pam Nawrot enjoyed vacation with her family in northern Wisconsin.
