Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Today we remember and honor the history, legacy and impact of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a figure who transcended his era through teachings and actions that resonate to this day. While much of his vision has been accomplished over these past fifty odd years, there is still much that remains unfinished.

In these turbulent times, when racism, bigotry and the miscarriage of justice continue to rear their ugly head; when we witness the unfortunate turn in our political discourse toward the lowest common denominator of intolerance, we are clearly reminded that the work of Dr. King is unfinished.

Yet, now is a moment where the words, actions and deeds of Dr. King can inspire and spur a change for the better. While we see injustice and hate, we also see those brave enough to stand up. Through social movements, stating the fact that Black Lives Matter; through workers movements fighting for the dignity of a living wage; and through the smallest of interactions we engage in on a daily basis with our neighbors, as we strengthen the bonds of our diverse community, undeterred by superficial differences.

Let us take full remembrance today and every day, that 'the arc of the moral universe is long it is long but it bends toward justice.' But let us also take note that it does not bend on its own. It is incumbent upon us to uphold the legacy of Dr. King, to forge a more tolerant and productive society, to be those who create that bend.  Thank you.

Sincerely,
