The tail end of summer has been quite the whirlwind around here - in fact, much of the craziness was due in part to the
literal winds of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. With one daughter in living in Houston and the other in Sarasota, these storms have been at the forefront of my mind for the last couple weeks.
Luckily both daughters live in communities that were spared much of the effects of the storms. However, we'd like to do our part in helping recovering communities rebuild themselves. Locally, Walk the Walk Foundation and Gvozden Pediatrics are hosting a Hurricane relief drive on October 8th. To help with this
relief effort, Sew Beautiful will be a drop-off location through October 6th for the "smaller" items. This event
flyer gives all the
details and a complete list of nonperishable items being collected.
Now that things have calmed down again, I've had the chance to focus on this month's feature article that answers a question we are often asked: is it best to reupholster or slipcover furniture? After last month's article about easy home preparations in advance of the holiday season, addressing this question seems like an appropriate followup. Harlequin Diamonds

Sometimes we have a piece of lackluster furniture in our home that we just can't seem to part with. Maybe we love the size, maybe we love the detail, or perhaps it's a family heirloom. Luckily, there are two solutions that can offer a facelift while maintaining the integrity of the furniture.
Upholstery
offers a permanent recovering of all fabric and if ncecessary, the repair of the piece of furniture.
Slipcovers
can be a more versatile and temporary solution, like putting together a new outfit that is tailor-made but still interchangeable. While both offer the opportunity to update to your taste, here are some of the benefits of each:

Showcasing Detail
Upholstery is best for pieces that have a lot of detail, like this heirloom sofa with its beautiful carved wood frame. Covering this piece in a soft white textured linen and adding the double welting along the outside back edges adds detail that defines and customizes this beautiful piece.

Update or Repair
If a furniture piece is older and needs structural repair or cushion replacements, upholstery is a better option. Our client liked the size of this love seat, but the cushions were stiff, uncomfortable, and looked a little tired. A change of fabric, removing the skirt and replacing the cushions updates this piece with an on-trend look.

Convenient Versatility
Slipcovers offer versatility because they can easily be changed. They also offer the chance to be more daring in your fabric selection. The happy floral fabric of this chair in our client's art studio is fittingly fun, but should she choose to relocate it to a more subdued room, the slipcover can be removed or remade.

Family Friendly
Slipcovers are easily removable for cleaning - either by machine or dry cleaning. They're a great option for family spaces or heavily used areas. Here, a sofa and ottoman slip-covered in washable Sunbrella fabrics can withstand daily family activities, be easily removed, cleaned and put back on again.
