Domestic violence is defined as a purposeful pattern of coercive behavior used to maintain power and control over one's intimate partner. About 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men experience some form of domestic violence.

The Catholic Charities’ Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault program provides free and confidential services to those experiencing domestic abuse or sexual violence in nine counties in southwest Iowa: Audubon, Cass, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie and Shelby.

Catholic Charities Legacy Leader

Joe Happe

Joe Happe’s leadership, advocacy and support has helped shape Catholic Charities into a strong organization committed to empowering individuals and strengthening families. Joe joined the Catholic Charities Board of Directors in 2012 and served for nine years. During his time, he helped the organization grow and move forward. He also helped support, uplift and acknowledge the needs and efforts of the Catholic Charities’ team and the important work they do every day.

“When I was asked to join the Catholic Charities Board of Directors I was thrilled,” said Joe. “My favorite part was seeing the impact people’s financial support, in-kind donations and volunteer work have on the individuals in our communities who really need the help.”

Why I Lead

Catholic Charities Staff Spotlight: Brittani Hilario

Brittani recently celebrated 9 years at Catholic Charities. She is a Legal Advocate for the Catholic Charities' Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault program, providing legal advocacy for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Brittani enjoys spending time with her family, being outdoors, traveling and fueling her newfound passion – attending concerts. Thank you Brittani for all you do!

My favorite part about working with Catholic Charities is the culture of our program being very family-oriented and the support I receive from my

co-workers and management,” said Brittani.

100 Years of Care and Compassion: Phoenix House

The Catholic Charities’ Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault program, lovingly referred to by many as the Phoenix House, was established to provide a safe and confidential space for men, women and children. The name “Phoenix” is in reference to a phoenix rising up out of the ashes and recognizes survivors’ determination to move forward.

This last fiscal year, the shelter cared for 92 adults and children. You can support those currently being served by shopping our Amazon Wish List.
