A free press is vital to building democratic societies.
So on World Press Freedom Day, USAID shared stories of our press and media empowerment work in more than 30 countries.
Aissatou Ndiaye of Senegal once feared speaking up because she thought that advocacy was a “man’s job.” Today, as a reporter trained with USAID support, she speaks out about women’s leadership on a radio broadcast that reaches 150,000 people. Aissatou shares her journey on the USAID Storytelling Hub.
In Burma, USAID is supporting an inclusive media landscape that empowers a free press as the country transitions to democracy. Since 2001, a journalism program on the Thai-Burma border has trained more than 1,000 reporters, enabling them to share their stories on Radio Free Asia and other international outlets.

Administrator Smith visits Burma
