The Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute

Community Advisory Council Retreat 2023

On Friday, December 1st, the Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute's Community Advisory Council hosted the second annual CAC Retreat. Members, supporters, and special guests gathered at the Piedmont Club in Spartanburg to reflect on accomplishments in the past year as participants in the NCI Cancer Moonshot Biobank Research Protocol and future engagement goals for 2024.

Dr. Amy Curtis, Medical Director of Gibbs Cancer Center, gave a presentation and provided updates and milestones from the Gibbs Cancer Center, along with how Gibbs continues to serve the community and families throughout the Upstate and the advancement of oncology treatment through clinical trials. Audrianna Carrington, the Lead Moonshot Coordinator, updated the council on the Moonshot accruals and how Upstate Carolina NCORP continues to reach our Moonshot engagement goals, focusing on Black/African American enrollment, with 47% of our site's Moonshot patients identifying as Black/African American. Additionally, Dr. Curtis and Audrianna informed the CAC members that one of Upstate Carolina's Moonshot research specimens generated a mouse model, which researchers will use to find a better way to treat cancer in the future.

One of the most honorable moments from the Community Advisory Council Retreat was the speech from a local Spartanburg community member, a multiple myeloma survivor, sharing her survivorship journey with the CAC and exuding what it truly means to advocate for yourself as a patient and be active in your community.

Upstate Carolina NCORP's team at Gibbs Cancer Center is proud of our partnerships in the community that represents the Community Advisory Council. The council has created a safe space for members to inform the cancer research team through meaningful, authentic dialogue to build knowledge, advance cancer research, increase clinical trial participation, and improve outcomes in underrepresented communities.

Happy Holidays!
