On Tuesday, June 10th, Audrianna Carrington, Lead Moonshot Coordinator led a community outreach and engagement educational session, with a focus on the NCI Cancer Moonshot Biobank Research Protocol. Gibbs hosted LaToya Dodson, Health Careers Program Coordinator, and a group of thirty-five students from the Upstate Area Health Education Center (AHEC). Upstate AHEC (Area Health Education Center) is a non-profit, community-based organization committed to connecting students to health careers, healthcare professionals to communities, the healthcare workforce to continuing education, and communities to better health.
The students were provided mock trial case studies for the following cancer types: Multiple Myeloma, Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer, and Colorectal Cancer. The presentations focused on the Moonshot Biobank’s clinical trial eligibility (inclusion/exclusion) criteria, targeted therapy drugs and the informed consent process. The AHEC students, acting as real-world clinical research professionals, presented their cases to an audience of peers, as well as learned about clinical research career pathways, the importance of following Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, and the ethical principles of research.
Special shout out and thank you to the Gibbs Clinical Research Team & Pelham Medical Center staff for facilitating an interactive educational session and leading the group of AHEC students on a Gibbs Cancer Center – Pelham tour:
