ReGenesis Healthcare Women’s Health Event: A Healthy Woman is a Powerful Woman

Audrianna Carrington, Lead Moonshot Coordinator, participated in the 3rd Annual ReGenesis Healthcare Women’s Health Event titled “A Healthy Woman is a Powerful Woman” to discuss various health-related topics among the community. She engaged an audience of patients and community members about the importance of cancer research, participating in clinical trials, the barriers to participating in clinical trials, medical mistrust, and community engagement at the Gibbs Cancer Center, specifically the Community Advisory Council that stems from our NCORP’s participation in the Cancer Moonshot Biobank Research Study. One of the main topics she focused on was the importance of education among patients and families regarding clinical trials and the different types of research studies that take place at our cancer center. For example, she discussed the importance of asking questions about the difference between an observational research trial and an interventional trial, as well as understanding the importance of cancer control and cancer care delivery research that focuses on the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, and how clinical researchers and staff can present ideas and community concerns to study sponsors and stakeholders about the most effective way to implement community engagement in trials, with a goal of better cancer treatment and cancer health outcomes for communities.
