Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, aimed to increase public awareness of the importance of prostate health and screenings, educate about risk factors and symptoms, and advocate for further research on prostate health issues.
Research has shown that prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in men in the United States and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among men, especially in South Carolina, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). Additionally, according to the National Cancer Institute, almost all prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas, meaning these cancer cells originate in gland cells that make and release mucus and other fluids. NCI-funded researchers continue to work towards advancing our understanding of how to prevent, detect, and treat prostate cancer due to challenges in choosing the best treatment options for patients at all stages of the disease (Wang et al., 2021).
Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is a key period for education and advocacy through events and screenings to combat stigma, promote early prevention and intervention, and minimize prostate cancer risk.
