By Josh Clevenstine

Zach Rabeler grew up in Oneonta, where he developed a fondness for mountain biking and trail work. When he moved to further north in 2013 to attend SUNY Adirondack in Queensbury, Zach noticed how few purpose-built mountain bike trails existed in the area. Here he was living in the foothills of the Adirondack Park and most places to mountain bike were old logging roads and hiking trails. In 2014 this all started to change when the Town of Queensbury committed to building singletrack trails at Gurney Lane Recreation Area – this was the same year that Zach happened to start an internship at trail builder Wilderness Property Management.

Zach got involved with WPM through the SUNY Adirondack Adventure Sports program. Part of the two-year course required an internship, which owner Steve Ovitt was nice enough to accept him for. During this four-week internship, Zach worked on the trails at the Ski Bowl in North Creek. The following winter, while skiing at Gore, Steve offered him a job for the next season.

Over time, Zach had to work his way from developing the physical stamina needed to manually cut trails for eight hours a day, to learning how each individual trail ages over time, to then learning the business side of the build. What does the customer want? How do you deliver what they are requesting with the budget they have setup? All these things took time and were learned under Steve’s tutelage.

Physical Activity and Dehydration

My Firsthand Experience

By Skip Holmes

Endurance athletes and active people participate in many sports and recreational activities. During the summer months and even in some winter environments it is possible to experience dehydration symptoms.

The symptoms of dehydration are numerous. They can include dizziness, fatigue, lightheadedness, extreme thirst, dry mouth, headaches and muscle cramps. Athletes and those who simply overexert themselves can find that they can experience these issues. If you or someone else experiences severe symptoms, such as extreme dizziness, confusion, fainting, rapid breathing, or no urine output, seek emergency medical attention immediately. This is a dangerous health concern.

Those of us who engage in endurance sports often find that fluid replacement is one of the biggest challenges. Replacing fluids (water) is only a part of the equation for maintaining adequate hydration. During prolonged periods of high intensity exercise the body secretes sweat which is comprised of water as well as a number of important minerals for regulation of body processes needed to support exercise.

The role of electrolytes in maintaining heart rhythm is well documented in health and medical literature. These minerals are potassium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium. Many sports drinks contain various amounts of these important and necessary minerals. However, what each athlete requires is somewhat unique to themselves.
