Urban Legend - Rolling Shutter vs Global Shutter

An Urban Legend that just won't go away!

We have all been told that a camera with a rolling shutter cannot do survey mapping. This has been repeated by so many that it just drives me nuts.

Seriously?

I have tested that Myth and it is an Urban Legend.

The latest digital cameras have extremely fast shutter speeds.

I have mapped hundreds of missions with a rolling shutter camera with no issues whats so ever over the past several years.

"Below is the worst case scenario with an extremely slow shutter speed. This would not be good for mapping or any other kind of photography. This camera is not good for anything."

Below are several images taken with a drone flying along on a mission at normal speed between 11 to 14 mph.

First up. The Phaseone camera on an M600 drone ($50k).

Second. The Inspire 2 with x5s camera ($6k).

Third. The Mavic 2 Pro ($1.5k).

Conclusion

Other than the Field of View and some slight color differences between the three cameras, there is no difference.

If you look closely at the original files, the x5s image is actually sharper than the Phaseone. Go figure that one out!

The only thing that the Phaseone camera has going for it is that it has been thoroughly calibrated to really tight tolerances and the image distortion has been minimized meaning that you need less side overlap (about 30%) than the non-calibrated cameras (70% or more).

Below are the number of images and flight height of the three different drones of the same site for a GSD of 1cm, more or less.
