Return on your investments

Dear friends of the Urban Mission,

Can you believe we have almost reached the end of 2023? Wow!  It’s always around this time of the year that I find myself in a reflective mood. What will I remember about 2023? There are many things that come to mind.

One thought in particular is the word “Invested.” This is the word we chose as the Urban Mission’s theme for the year. Reflecting on this theme, I am thankful for the many opportunities the Urban Mission has had to invest in the lives of others throughout 2023. Whether it was through our food pantry or our shelters, our thrift store, our job readiness programs, or our weekly ministry opportunities, we have tried to live out our theme of being “invested” the best we know how. We hope our work has been honoring to God and that we made you proud as well!

For those of you who are our prayer partners, donors, and volunteers you might be wondering how your investment in the Urban Mission fared this year.

Here are some important numbers I wanted to share with you.

As of the beginning of November, the Urban Mission hosted 29,638 visits to our food pantry and provided provide 639,358 meals!

-       We provided shelter to 334 people and exited 200 families to permanent housing!

-       We distributed 631 clothing vouchers and more than 600 coats, hats and gloves.

-       We created space for life changing breakthroughs to occur and prepared 95 individuals for the workforce.

-       We hosted 52 worship services or Bible studies and celebrated multiple victories over addiction, loneliness, and despair.

-       And in spite of the busyness of the year, we also launched Phase One of our Opportunity Center renovation at the 7th Street plaza!

As you know, each number represents a person, or a family, whose life was impacted by a simple bag of food, or a warm bed to sleep in, or just a listening ear. Knowing this, reminds us that our investments of prayer, resources and time are absolutely worth it!

Now, as we prepare for the Thanksgiving and Christmas season, the work continues! In fact, we expect 1,000 MORE local families will walk through the doors of an Urban Mission ministry site seeking help.

If you’ve been looking for a way to “invest” in a ministry this season, I encourage you to consider the Urban Mission. We appreciate your generosity and support.

Invested in you,

Rev. Ashley Steele

Join us this week for a Homeless Awareness event

The Urban Mission invites the community to join us on Thursday, November 16, 2023, as we observe National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness week through a community conversation created to address the truths of Hunger & Homelessness in our community.

This event will provide an opportunity for dialogue between individuals who have experienced homelessness and those who want to learn more about homelessness. Community members will also learn about the community agencies who are working together to address the issues of hunger and homelessness in our community and how they can get involved.

More than 600 warm items distributed so far!

This year, our Community Engagement Department and Urban Thrift & Opportunity Center teamed up to prepare for this year's Fall Coat Drive & Giveaway. Throughout the months of September and October donations of new and gently used coats, hats, gloves and scarves poured in through our Donation Center filling watermelon boxes to the brims!

On October 30th and 31st, our two-day distribution welcomed close to 135 people and distributed 381 coats, 95 pairs of gloves, 63 hats, and 73 scarves.

Emily Palmer, Urban Mission Intern and coat giveaway volunteer, had this to say about the distribution: “The coat drive was a complete success! Hundreds of coats and winter accessories were given out to the public. Ms. Patti and I talked about the beauty of seeing each person check out with their bag of coats knowing that they will be warmer than they were yesterday. When I arrived at the coat drive, I thought my main task would be organizing and passing out coats. I realized quickly that the coat drive was not as much about coats as it was about fellowship. We had many powerful conversations with those who came by about God’s love and the beauty of gratitude. Urban Mission not only provided the public with warm clothes, but also with a reminder that God is always present.”

We were blessed to have Ms. Georgia Lopresto, Urban Thrift staff member, and Ms. Patti West, retired Urban Mission staff and longtime Coat Giveaway organizer join us for another year, serving our community both days of the distribution.

We are grateful for the continued generosity and support from our community for this event. Thank you for helping to make this year's Fall Coat Drive & Distribution a great success!
