Free Toolkit on Welcoming and Inclusive Communities

Saskatchewan hometowns are where people come together in community, and there's a free toolkit to help you make your communities as welcoming and inclusive as possible. The Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan (MCoS) has created an eight-module toolkit, and SUMA is proud to encourage all our members to take advantage of this amazing resource.

The Welcoming and Inclusive Communities Toolkit is available on the MCoS website, and paper copies are available if you email project@mcos.ca. See today's media release for more details.

Mayors Summer School Success

Mayors from more than 40 Saskatchewan hometowns attended the second Mayors Summer School August 20-21. The mayors got a one-of-a-kind university experience, with classes held on the University of Regina campus, with many staying on campus in student residence!

There were presentations on leadership lessons, governing without administering, legal tangles, mind mapping, and public relations/media training - and that was just Monday! Tuesday included a session on municipal best practices, one on regional cooperation, and a full-group discussion to wrap up the experience.

Thanks to all mayors who attended! You can check out the Facebook album to see all the action, and find out more about the program in  this CBC story and one from CTV.

Crime Committee Report and Recommendations

On Tuesday, August 22, 2017, the province released the Caucus Committee on Crime report and recommendations to reduce crime in small urban and rural Saskatchewan. SUMA was pleased to be a part of the consultations for the CRC report, and it appears the committee considered our members' concerns.

We applaud the move toward proactive programming, such as mental health and addictions treatment, and school liaison officers. These efforts can help in the long term to reduce crime and improve the quality of life for all Saskatchewan residents.

However, we remain concerned that the re-purposing of ministry-funded positions in municipal police departments and RCMP detachments will negatively affect policing capacity for some of our larger members.

We look forward to further discussions with Minister Wyant and his staff to ensure that the policing needs of all SUMA members, from our smallest villages to our largest cities, are being met.

You can read the committee's full report and recommendations on the Government of Saskatchewan website.

Green Success Story:
Lumsden Launches Solar

Congratulations to the Town of Lumsden on their newly launched solar system at River Park! The 10kW system not only adds renewable energy sources to the power grid, but also reduces the Town's power costs, with no upfront capital cost. Now that's a win-win situation.

This is just one example of SUMA members living up to the Convention 2017 resolution "that urban municipalities assume a leadership role in adopting carbon reduction strategies." You can see more examples on the resolution page. If you have a green success story, pass it along by emailing us
