JOIN MSNO EFFORTS TO STOP BILL H.5052

Dear MSNO Membership,

MSNO learned about H.5052 Friday July 29th as it was being passed in the Senate. In collaboration with our lobbyist we tried to stop it getting passed, but we were unsuccessful! Late Friday afternoon the Senate passed H.5052 and it has gone to the Governor’s desk and may be signed into law in the next 10 days if we are unable to stop it.

H.5052 An Act providing for diabetes management in schools changes the law to allow a school nurse or physician to delegate to other school personnel (unlicensed personnel) the authority to administer insulin or glucose monitoring tests to students. This would impact student safety and raises concerns about liability, cost, training process, and more. The bill is attached below.

MSNO and MNA oppose this bill and sent a joint letter to the Senate and now to the Governor’s office to ask that it be stopped (copy attached). MSNO also sent a separate letter with additional details and it is available below as a reference. MSNO is asking all of our membership to call or email the Governor’s office within the next few days to ask that the bill be vetoed. The contact information for his constituent services is below. You can use the letters below as references for talking points.

Please contact the Governor, rather than your legislators, as the bill has already moved through the house and senate and is currently on his desk. Governor Baker’s office is the one we need to reach out to.

After you call or email, I would appreciate it if you could email me to let me know that you reached out and what response you received. Please also pass this on to every school nurse you know. The more nurses that reach out, the better chance we have of stopping this.

We are so grateful for all that you do to support the students throughout the Commonwealth and recognize that this is your summer break. However, if signed into law it would go into effect in 90 days and we have to act quickly to stop this.

In your service,

Cathryn Hampson
