Engage - Act - Effect Change

Facebook            Web

Dear Eve,

**URGENT ACTION ALERT FROM INDIVISIBLE**

Senate Republicans want to vote on their Medicaid-slashing, billionaire-enriching reconciliation bill this weekend, and that means “vote-a-rama” -- when senators can propose endless changes that their colleagues then need to vote on -- could start as soon as today.

Here is what YOU can do right now.

STEP 1: Call our Democratic Senators.

Some of our Democratic Senators need a wake-up call from their constituents ASAP; others just need a reminder that we’ll have their backs when they fight as hard as possible. Indivisible has provided a script and will connect you to the right office, but you need to make the call.

STEP 2: Share your own amendment

The vote-a-rama process we mentioned above allows Senate Democrats to propose change after change to this bill, with virtually no limit on how many painful votes they can force Republicans to take.

Your amendment could be something like:

  • An amendment to transfer all the dollars for ICE funding to NPR and PBS, instead
  • An amendment to tax recipients of luxury jets gifted by foreign governments at 100% of the jet's market value
  • An amendment to cut every lawmaker’s salary and per diem by the same percentage SNAP gets cut

Send your proposed amendments to your Democratic senators here -- and remind them to do all they can to force as many painful votes as possible.

Are you familiar with the "3.5% rule"? Watch Erica Chenowith on a recent episode of Pod Save America, discuss her findings about how sustained, nonviolent movements (such as protests, boycotts, and civil disobedience) are very likely to bring about social or political change, Protests engaging "a threshold of 3.5% of the population have never failed to bring about change."

The No Kings protests across this country, brought out over 5 million people-- that's almost half way to the 3.5%! One of the reasons we are doing this work is because there is both research-based and anecdoctal evidence that shows it works. Scroll down to see many different ways you can get involved... and bring a friend or family member!

Cards for Democracy; Saving Democracy One Card At A Time

This is NOT post carding...it's a different concept.

Currently the Card Campaign has a No Kings In America card and a Know Your Rights card..

Let’s get these messages out there! Print and distribute the cards—leave them with tips at restaurants, place them in grocery stores, put them on community bulletin boards, and slip them into laundromats. Train stations and airports are also great places to leave cards. We have distribution guides tailored for introverts, extroverts, and everyone in between to inspire your creativity.

Call your Senator and Representative about issues that matter to you

Go to 5calls.org → enter your zip → pick an issue → get connected to your reps, with a script you can use. You can call daily for issues you care about.

Recent Wins: The Power of Jumping Into Action

We are also taking time to celebrate some recent good news that may not have reached the front pages. Here are a few:

  • D.C. residents honor Juneteenth with a Jubilee and Freedom Walk on the very path where enslaved people once escaped to freedom.
  • Tulsa, OK announces a $105 million package devoting dollars and actions toward reparations for a racial-terror massacre in 1921.
  • Denka chemical plant will close in Louisiana’s “Cancer Alley” after years of advocacy from residents

What was the first rally or protest you ever attended?

The first protest I attended was after the Muslim Ban in early 2017, and I was at the Women’s March in Boston shortly after that. The energy of the protests in 2017 was really encouraging, but I was disappointed that so little of that energy propagated to elected officials at the time, or perhaps we wouldn't be facing another Trump term now. Since then I’ve been to many protests. As the risk of authoritarian crackdowns and personal consequences has increased over recent years, I’m always impressed by the large numbers who are willing to still show up.

What's one piece of advice you'd give someone who is new to activism?

Find a topic that fires you up. Activism takes a lot of energy and effort, but it’s made easier and is so rewarding when it’s something you’re passionate about.

Above: Billy with his wife Carina and their dog Teddy

Which activist (living or dead) would you want to have dinner with?

James Baldwin for dinner- I think that few people in modern American history have spoken and written with such moral and ethical clarity on the sins of our past, but he still believed that there was a path forward anyway. If I could give just a “thank you” to anyone, it would be Greta Thunberg. Her resilience is incredible.

What is a hobby or passion completely unrelated to politics?

I’ve always been a huge video gamer, but I think it would be wrong to say that games are unrelated to politics. Many of the most impactful moral and ethical lessons I’ve learned over my life came from games! For instance, I'd encourage anyone who feels ground under the heel of late-stage capitalism, to play the 2022 game Citizen Sleeper - a story about surviving and making connections in a future world that feels like it's going backwards.

Whether it's an in-person gathering or a virtual event, we’d love to see what you’ve been a part of! Email your pictures to us at IndivisibleWin@gmail.com

As Trump and his administration continue to flood the zone, we are keeping our eyes on the ball, and continue to march toward that 3.5%. The school year may be over and summer vacations upon us, but our fight for democracy doesn't pause. We need to keep making good trouble and let our voices be heard!
