A request from the Wisconsin LWV:
Beginning yesterday, 3/25, Governor Evers has ordered Wisconsin residents to stay at home for the next month, with limited exceptions. ThIs order includes a prohibition on gatherings with people outside of one's household.

And as you know, the pandemic is forcing many voters to use absentee, mail-in ballots, some for the first time in their lives. Unfortunately, the pandemic and the Governor's order will make it impossible for Wisconsin voters to obtain a witness signature on their mail-in absentee ballot from an adult United States citizen, if there is no such person in their household.

If you are self-quarantining, intend to vote by mail-in absentee ballot, AND you live alone or do not have an adult US citizen in your household, then please contact our partners at Fair Elections Center, specifically Jon Sherman, at  [email protected]  or (845) 596-9081 (his cell).

If you know someone who is in this position, please forward this message along or better yet make a call to speed the process up. We need to identify people who are facing this barrier to voting ASAP.

Again we are asking that you help spread the word. WI voters can now register to vote online until Monday, March 30. The WEC has announced that myvote.wi.gov is ready, as of today, March 25, to process registrations.
Please also continue to advocate for
mail-in absentee voting in the April 7th election.

Tips from LWVWI for Absentee Voting

  • Plan ahead. Make your request for an absentee ballot at myvote.wi.gov well before the deadline (April 2). 

  • The U.S. Postal Service recommends you mail back your absentee ballot at least one week before Election Day so that it arrives in time. The deadline is 8 PM on Election Day, April 7.

  • You must include a copy of your photo ID along with your request. For those making their request online, it's as simple as taking a picture of your license, passport or valid ID on your phone and uploading it to the site. Get in touch with your municipal clerkif you need assistance getting a copy of your photo ID to them. (Note: Indefinitely confined, military, and overseas voters are exempt from the photo ID requirement.)

  • Be sure to follow the instructions sent with your ballot to ensure your votes are counted. 


In-person Absentee Voting (Early Voting)Is in Progress

You can register and vote an absentee ballot in your municipal clerk's office during specified days and hours. Note: Because of Coronavirus precautions, some municipal clerks' hours have changed. Check ahead. Links to all La Crosse County municipal clerks' offices can be found  here .  

If you get an absentee ballot mailed to you, you can still decide to vote at the polls on Election Day if you haven’t returned it.

F air Maps Wisconsin

The fight to end gerrymandering in Wisconsin and throughout the US is a signature effort by the League of Women Voters at all levels this year. You can learn more about the "People Powered Fair Maps" program here .

The League of Women Voters of the La Crosse Area is working to pass a citizen advisory referendum in Monroe and Trempealeau County. Thanks to La Crosse League members for joining with nonpartisan volunteers to educate voters about the nonpartisan redistricting process for Wisconsin. In total, nine counties will have the Fair Maps question on the April 7th ballot.  

La Crosse and Vernon County voters passed the Fair Maps referendum in 2019. However, our work is not done! Voters are invited to ask state legislative and statewide candidates, "If elected would you support a nonpartisan redistricting reform process like Iowa's plan?"
