Urgent needs in Laredo, Texas/Necesidad urgente en Laredo, Texas

The ILT is passing along this urgent request for assistance at the U.S.-Mexico border from Sister Donna Markham OP, president and CEO of Catholic Charities USA. Please do what you can to be responsive to the ongoing need there.

I’m writing with yet another plea for assistance at the border. I will be going to Laredo soon with some monetary donations, but the situation there far exceeds what we are able to do. There are 17 other Catholic Charities agencies that are absorbing the migrants as best they can, but Laredo clearly is in the greatest need right now. If you think it appropriate, I’m wondering if you could once again alert LCWR members to this need. I will also copy CMSM on this and will alert the USCCB. The Washington Post’ s Nick Miroff reports that it is “the worst I have ever seen. Overcrowding at Border Patrol stations in South Texas has become so acute in recent days that U.S. authorities have taken the rare step of using aircraft to relocate migrants to other areas of the border simply to begin processing them,” Miroff reports.

Staff who returned from Laredo this weekend report that this influx has created an untenable situation in the Laredo sector of the border where our small Catholic Charities agency is trying to cope with hundreds of additional migrants daily. (They were prepared to receive 200 people/day but now are receiving over 500/day.) Their donated supplies have been depleted. They are in desperate need of FOOD (canned chicken noodle soup, pinto beans, fruit cocktail, corn tortillas, water), CLOTHING —Children and Adult—Men and Women in Small, Medium and Large (No XL), SHOES —all sizes except very large, BELTS and SHOELACES (these are taken away in the detention center) and DIAPERS —all sizes.

There is also a huge need for Spanish-speaking volunteers who might be able to spend a month in Laredo.

Escribo con otra petición para ayudar en la frontera. Iré pronto a Laredo con dinero recibido de donaciones, pero la situación ahí ya excede lo que podemos hacer. Hay otras 17 agencias de caridades católicas que están absorbiendo lo mejor que pueden las necesidades de los inmigrantes, pero claramente Laredo ahora tiene una mayor necesidad. Si lo ven conveniente, pasen nuevamente la alerta a miembros de la Conferencia de Religiosas en Liderazgo ( LCWR , por sus siglas en inglés). Estoy copiando en este mensaje a la Conferencia de Superiores Mayores de Varones ( CMSM , por sus siglas en inglés) y voy a alertar a la Conferencia del Episcopado de Estados Unidos ( USCCB , por sus siglas en inglés). Nick Miroff de Washington Post informa que es «lo peor que he visto. El hacinamiento en las estaciones de la patrulla fronteriza en el Sur de Texas se ha agudizado tanto en los últimos días que las autoridades de los Estados Unidos han hecho una medida rara utilizando aviones para reubicar a inmigrantes en otras áreas de la frontera, simplemente para comenzar el proceso», informa Miroff.

Miembros del personal que regresaron este fin de semana de Laredo informan que la afluencia ha generado una situación insostenible en el sector de la frontera de Laredo donde nuestra pequeña agencia de caridad católica trata de hacer frente a los cientos de inmigrantes que se suman cada día. (Estaban preparados para recibir 200 personas a diario, pero ahora están recibiendo más de 500 todos los días). Los suministros donados se han agotado. Tienen gran necesidad de ALIMENTOS (caldo de pollo enlatado, frijoles pintos, cóctel de frutas, tortillas de maíz, agua), ROPA — para niños y adultos — hombres y mujeres, talla mediana y grande (no extragrande), ZAPATOS — de todas las tallas, pero no muy grandes, CINTURONES y CORDONES PARA ZAPATOS (se los quitan en el centro de detención) y PAÑALES — de todo tamaño.

También hay gran necesidad de voluntarios que hablen español y que puedan dedicar un mes de estadía en Laredo.
