Use Calflora to monitor native plants

Use Calflora tools to track plant population changes over time.

Calflora's phone app, custom data collection forms, and history stacks help volunteers from East Bay California Native Plant Society (EB CNPS) do just that.

"You found a new Lessingia population at the base of the hill with even more plants than the one on the top of the hill! Exciting!"

Dianne Lake, EB CNPS

EB CNPS created a group in Calflora. Group members visited Antioch Dunes NWR to monitor native plant populations there.

They used Calflora's phone app to add their Lessingia pectinata var. tenuipes (Sticky lessingia) observations to Calflora.

With the new observations, they created a history stack for this species on top of last year's records from the same locations.

Tracking polygon size and plant count, the group makes year-to-year comparisons.

Calflora history stacks they created show only 4-5 Senecio flaccidus (Shrubby ragwort) plants have been present on the Antioch Dunes NWR site since 2015.

"Note those adorable bracts," said Cat Chang, a member of EB CNPS's Calflora group.

Symphyotrichum lentum (Suisun marsh aster) is a rare plant that has been growing in (and floating near!) Antioch Dunes NWR since at least 1977, according to aggregated Calflora data.
