The bbe FishToximeter: Your solution for rapid detection of toxic substances in water—a real-time, online early warning system.
bbe Moldaenke GmbH has developed and produced measuring instruments and software to assess and manage water quality for more than 20 years. Made for use in oceanography, limnology, drinking water monitoring, river dam monitoring, bathing water analysis, supervision of aqua culture systems and environmental assessment, these instruments have come to be relied upon as the industry standard.
Real-time biomonitoring: Continuous analysis of fish behavioral patterns for the detection of toxins in water.
Chamber with camera in fish tank.

The bbe Fish Toximeter observes the behavior of fish in a tank under the influence of a stream of "sample" water with the aid of a camera and continuous computer-assisted image analysis. This highly sensitive instrument is designed to detect toxic substances in e.g. rivers, reservoirs, water supply systems, water treatment plant intakes and sewers.
Real-time online early warning system

Based on the development of Extended Dynamic Daphnia Tests (EDDT), a tried and tested detection method in Europe and other parts of the world, continuous biological monitoring with the bbe Fish Toximeter enables rapid detection of toxic substances in water and provides a real-time, online early warning system.

Observe, analyze, and record toxic contaminations and react to them quickly. The bbe Fish Toximeter is well-suited for the rapid detection of damage to water systems and ideal for long-term monitoring of water quality during "strategic" analysis.
  • Test results with fish can be used for comparisons with humans
  • Evaluation of 10 behavioral parameters
  • Error-free alarm detection
  • No sample preparation necessary
  • Splash-protected touch screen monitor
  • Optional dechlorination for use with chlorinated drinking water
  • Multiple control center connection options
Technology for water-quality monitoring
Continuous analysis of live video images enables rapid determination of the behavior and health of the fish. Toxicity computations and assessments are based on the measurement of the following behavioral parameters:

  • Swim speed
  • Behavior (height, turns, circular motion, etc.)
  • Determination of size
  • Number of active fish
  • Location of fish in the aquarium
Toxic Index
Each type of change in behavior of the fish is investigated and analyzed. That information is then summarized from all behavioral parameters and calculated permanently. If the toxic index exceeds a predetermined value for a particular amount of time, an alarm is triggered. For this, several behavioral parameters must show deviations.
