What a is Letter of Medical Necessity

Under IRS guidelines, some health care services and products are only eligible for reimbursement from a health care FSA, HRA, or HSA when a doctor or other licensed health care provider certifies that they are medically necessary.   The health care provider must indicate the specific diagnosed condition, the specific treatment needed, the length of treatment, and how it will alleviate the condition.

How does it work?

As the product recommender, the dental professional will need to fill out and provide the patient with a Letter of Medical Necessity.  The letter must specify the diagnosis, treatment needed, treatment length, and expected outcomes.  The patient will need to submit the letter and any required documentation to their plan administrator.  As plans vary, the patient should be advised that they should check with their plan administrator to confirm that the purchase is covered.
