The net energy (NE) system is largely misunderstood and not used by the poultry industry. However, as supply chains are stretched and environmental stewardship becomes a much larger part of poultry production, the NE system is proving beneficial. The NE system provides nutritionists a fundamental way of evaluating the true productive energy content in various feed ingredients, resulting in not only greater flexibility in the types of ingredients that can be used in feed formulation, but more predictable animal performance, higher economic returns, and greater sustainable use of costly resources. For the poultry industry to get the most out of NE, this symposium will showcase several influential members in the field of poultry nutrition. They will provide insight and understanding regarding NE and how to properly utilize it within poultry feed formulation and production.
