OCTOBER 2026

SIX YEARS OF COACHING FREEDOM

Six years ago, I had no idea the impact that this work would have.

I knew I wanted to help people. I knew money had the power to either keep people stuck or set them free and I had lived both sides of that story personally. My husband and I paid off over $147,000 in consumer and business debt. We ate at home a lot, we had a paper chain hung around our dining room to celebrate debt payoff. We did the work. We know what it costs psychologically, and we know what it feels like on the other side of the mess.

What I didn’t fully know yet was how many people were sitting in their own version of that story, waiting for someone to tell them that this kind of freedom and choice is possible.

Coaching Freedom started as an answer to that.

Six years later, I am still humbled by what this work is: honest conversations. The kind where someone finally says the thing they’ve been too embarrassed or too afraid to say out loud. Then we figure out what to do about it together.

If you’re new here, welcome. I’m Monica Wales, a trained Financial Coach, business coach, a speaker, and co-owner of Happy Laundry & Dry Cleaning. I serve individuals, families, and small business owners who are ready to stop the uncertainty around their money (& mindset) and start building something intentional with it.

Over the past six years, that service has taken many forms. From personal financial coaching sessions, business coaching engagements, speaking at events and conferences, and yes, even laundry business immersions for owners who want to learn the operational side of what we’ve built at Happy Laundry.

To every person who has trusted me with their story, thank you. You are the reason this work continues. The conversations are still happening. The work is still good and this is just the beginning.

This month, I’m thinking a lot about what it means to invest in yourself, in your business, and in your time.

THE INVESTMENT YOU'RE NOT USING

You did the hard part. You said yes to a solution. You paid, signed up, committed. And then… nothing changed.

Sound familiar?

I’m working with a wonderful local service provider who has genuinely shown up for me. They have done everything right on their end, and yet, I haven’t fully activated what I’ve paid for. That’s on me, not them.

A friend recently asked me about skincare. I said, “Don’t you already have the Gua sha tools?” She laughed. “Yes. But I never use them.”

My husband bought kettlebells over a year ago. Just the other day he said, “I should probably start using those.”

We do this with fitness equipment, skincare routines, online courses, and, business tools. And yes, sometimes financial and business coaching too.

Having an introductory call and then not taking the next steps produces the exact same result as never investing at all. The tool doesn’t change your life. Using the tool changes your life.

Financial investment alone is not a solution. It’s an entry point.

If you’re going to invest financially in a solution, be prepared to invest mentally too. The money gets you in the door. The mindset determines what happens next.

STOP GIVING IT AWAY

I was sitting in a local coffee shop last week, working, minding my business, when I overheard what sounded like a job interview. One candidate. Two interviewers in a professional setting and promising conversation.

Near the end, it shifted. The interviewers started talking about volunteer opportunities. Ways to “get involved.” Ways to contribute to the organization.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it. But what I heard underneath the pleasantries was "we see value in you, as long as you’ll work for free."

This topic came up just last week at the Amplifying Women’s Voices event, where a panel of local accomplished women had a lot to say about saying no and about recognizing when an “opportunity” is just unpaid labor dressed up in exciting language.

As women, we are often the doers. When we prove we can do things, we get asked to do more often without additional compensation and just a smile and a promise that “this will be great for your visibility.”

I’m tired of seeing this over and over again.

Your time, your expertise, your energy has VALUE TODAY.

If an organization genuinely wants what you bring to the table, they’ll make room for you at the table and in the budget, and not in the volunteer section.

You don’t have to earn your way into rooms that should already be open to you.

You might be wondering, what does it look like to stop giving it away?

Here are a few ways I try to lead by example:

When female entrepreneurs I work with are undercharging, I encourage them to charge more and oftentimes that means I pay more, gladly.

When women offer me something for free, I find a way to compensate them anyway.

When a female entrepreneur offers to shift her schedule earlier or later to accommodate my schedule, I decline. I don’t want her bending her boundaries on my behalf.

Every time we ask women to do more for less, we perpetuate the very problem we say we want to solve: the devaluing of women’s work, time, and expertise.

I’ve also gotten clearer about what I will and won’t do without compensation. Every time I say yes without some form of exchange, I’m sending a message about my own value. I refuse to be the one telling myself I’m worth nothing.

There is ONE exception. There are a few volunteer commitments where I choose to give my time, talent, and resources. Those are intentional and they are the exception, not the default.

The difference is that I decided. It was not someone else’s ask. Social pressure didn’t make me do it.

Decide that YOU ARE WORTHY and what you’re worth.

Say it out loud often.

And then, hold the line.

THREE NOVEMBER BUDGET

CONSIDERATIONS

1.    Holiday Spending Runway- Most people treat November as the month they start holiday shopping. The people who finish December without a financial hangover, treat it as the month they finish it. Before Black Friday arrives with its countdown timers and "limited time" banners, write out your gift list every person, every amount. When you walk into a sale with a plan, you're making intentional purchases. When you walk in without one, you're making emotional ones. The deals aren't the problem. Shopping without a plan with numbers is.

2.    Annual Subscription Renewals- November is one of the heaviest months for automatic subscription renewals. Software, streaming services, gym memberships, and annual plans that were signed up for during last year's holiday promotions all tend to hit around the same time automatically, and often for services you've barely touched. Pull up your bank and credit card statements from last November right now. Whatever renewed then will likely renew again this year. Cancel what you're no longer using before it does.

3.    Heating and Utility Bills- Additional cold snaps land in November, and your utility bill will feel it. For most households, heating costs jump 20 to 40 percent compared to October, sometimes more depending on where you live. It's one of those expenses that feels surprising every year even though it happens every year. Add a buffer to your utility budget now, before December stretches your finances in every other direction at the same time. Your future self will thank you.
